Over the years I've spoken to many collectors who either confess to playing with their 'toys' or are totally anti, some suggesting they wouldn't dare dream of doing such a thing. Is the divide between these two connected if not inseparable hobbies such that there is a level of animosity from those that just collect?

I cannot answer for anyone but myself but I feel one can do with their collection whatever one wants to do. Play with them or just enjoy them by looking at them (my preference). I do not hold any animosity towards anyone about their habits with their collection. I sorta wish I could still play with them but once I am down on the floor I need a crane to help get me up again. -- lancer

Personally I am a "mature adult" and business executive with over 1000 employees. I still love to set up my soldiers in battle formations and dioramas.
About a year ago I moved all the furniture in my basement and set up all my 54mm Napoleonic armies (over 2000 pieces) in a massive battle scene. My wife thought I had lost it but then realized it was my attempt at "stress relief" !
I spent an entire rainy day moving my miniature armies around and I had a ball!
My friends enjoy golf, watching a ball game, playing cards, surfing the internet, etc.....
We all need and are entitiled to our distractions and outlets.
It makes me feel young and brings a sense of history as well.

Life is serious.......
we need to play more!:):):)

Absolutely NySoldiers - coundn't agree with you more. When there is a limited amount of what I call 'ME' time available, I get the collection out, pour myself a large glass of claret, put the fife, drums and bagpipes CD on and disappear in to another realm. My better half thinks I've lost it too, but bless her she realises this form of escape from the real World is a great stress buster.
