The John Wayne cowboy post has reminded me there were other cowboy actors who made good movie's.......William Holden and Glenn Ford did an early movie together " Texas"....darn good movie....Glenn Ford later made " Sheepman and I think "Fastest gun alive"....WH went on to make another couple of westerns ...I cannot place them at the moment.....all good cowboy movies....Randolf Scott and Joel McC ? made some top westerns.....and...whata about Audie Murphy....maybe not the greatest actor but I enjoyed his movies...would have liked to have seen Audie and JW in a cowboy movie together .....but maybe John would have been embarrassed sharing a movie with a B grade star......when you look back....most of all the big Hollywood stars made Westerns...Jimmy Steward ...Destry and Audi made a Destry movie as well ...enjoyed both versions.....ofcourse Jimmy Stewart made several top class westerns.....James Cagney...Robert Taylor...Robert Mitchell...even Stewart Granger made a westen....Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy in San Francisco..not quiet a western but there was a saloon in the movie.....heaps of other actors whom I cannot recall at the moment.....John Wayne...may have been a Top Gun cowboy but there were plenty of other good cowboys riding the trail.....OHHHHHHH....I forgot Errol Flynn and Ronald Regan....unforgivable.......cheers TomB.

Lots of great actors and movies in that group, Tom. Randolph Scott is one of my favorites, just behind the Duke, when it comes to westerns, as is Joel McCrae. If you've never seen it, catch Sam Peckinpah's "Ride the High Country" starring Scott and McCrae. It is a classic. -- Al

Al.... Could not think of how to spell "McCrae"......." Ride the high country"....great movie alright....saw it about a year ago (again and again ).....two of my favorites cowboys together.....never understood why Joel McCrae never made the big time....lots of actors out there you liked but they never made it big....that's life I guess...regards TomB

Clint Eastwood has got to be up there along with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. Also, a lot of the character actors in the westerns were amazing like Jack Palance, Jack Elam, Walter Brennan, etc.

It is generally forgotten today, or even unknown by many, that Walter Brennan is one of only three men to win 3 Academy Awards. He won 3 Best Supporting Actor Awards, 1936, 1938, and in 1940. He is accepted as the best character actor in Hollywood history. -- Al

Loved Walter Brennan's voice...and character acting...I did not know about the 3 Academy Awards......that has made my day.....was Walter ever young?......I first saw WB in an early Gary Cooper movie " Sgt York"...WB only had a very small part as the local store-man...AND...he looked old then.....vaguely remember him as a bad guy in one cowboy movie.....maybe one of the Clinton ?......regards TomB

Tom, if memory serves me, Brennan played Ike Clanton in My Darling Clementine, John Ford's take on the Earp-Clanton feud. Henry Fonda starred as Wyatt Earp. Not very accurate to facts, but a highly entertaining version of events. As a matter of interest, My Darling Clementine is the film that is the centerpiece of one of the better episodes in the TV show MASH. The whole camp is gathered in a tent watching the movie, but the film keeps breaking, allowing time for the camp crowd to tell stories and entertain each other. The show ends with the movies final shootout as everyone in the camp feigns a shootout and they all end up on the ground. It is a great episode. -- Al

Henry Fonda...another good cowboy actor...forgot Henry...remembered Jane in Barbarella.....He he he ...dirty ole man..me...That Mash episode sounds like a goodie....missed that one.....the MASH series was great..I .was not impressed with the movie....Gregoire Peck...another cowboy.....I think you made a comment some time ago ago about "Lust in the Dust" ...amazing when you think of it of how many TOP actors appeared in Westerns......Alan Ladd, ( probably not everyone's faverite ) made some darn good gangster movies and made several Westerns...Shane...being one.....the mind boggles.....regards TomB

We watched McClintock last evening. It's a fun movie. I was surprised to spot Bob Steele, the star or sometimes the villain, of many black and white B westerns playing a very small part in the movie. The part was so small that I almost missed him but I'm sure that's who it was. He was the railway man who opened the cattle car to let the chiefs out. He goes back to the era of Hopalong Cassidy.

When reading the Jack Ryan novels by Tom Clancey I have always pictured Holden as Ryan. think he would have been ideal in the part in the films. Trooper
