My copy of this two volume compendium of Bill Mauldin's classic G.I. comics arrived today (it was a banner day for the delivery man, this and my K&C De Haviland Mosquito arrived). I can't recommend these books more highly! Just flipping through them when they arrived made me feel closer to that greatest generation.

Way to go Louis! I have the originals, and I suspect this new set is in my

pending birthday box:D:D

As it took my recent Arnhem set 15 days to reach me from Canada........

how on earth did your new Warbird arrive so

F A S T :eek::eek:

Andy sends the Warbirds Federal Express International Priority. Unless they get hung up in customs, they arrive the next day. I have 67 now, and everyone shipped by Andy directly arrived safely (including once when I bought 7 together!).

Well thats great to know! Hell its almost worth ordering one just to see that

happen! Most of my items wind up on the mailmans mantle for at least a

week:eek:

Be sure to post some photos!

If you can find it at your crowded Airstrip:D:D

Don't worry NJJA, I can find anything I need to in my museum (I used up what was left of my brain capacity memorizing where I keep everything in my collection).

One of these days, I will break out the digital camera and bust Brad's chops to post a bunch of shots of my newest acquisitions.

You know we are all waiting for that!

Nothing like an evening spent enjoying classic pieces!:)

The busting chops part or the pictures? You east coast types scare me! Fuhgeddaboudit!

I'm always up for a view of Louis's Museum! Every time you look at the interesting photos you see something you may have never seen before.

Thats what is great about a collection like that, items can be looked at and
studied as opposed to being stored away in a box somewhere.

One day you just might come across something, at an antique or soldier show, and remember it from Louis's photos and make a nice buy.

Over the years I have had quite a number of great finds......just from knowing what I was looking at.

A few years ago I found a wonderful Lionel item with the original box, as it
was being handed to me after the sale another fellow came running up. He had seen the item, and left to buy a price guide from another dealer to confirm what it was.

He was stunned to say the least, not only did he miss the piece he spent
$18.95 on a guide he had home.

Classic items are hard enough to find, you want to know what you are looking at when you stumble across one.

Louis,

I first read Bill Mauldin's "Up Front" back in high school anf have re-read it since. A great book and a good look at the WW2 GI by a guy who observed them carefully (and was one). Mauldin is one of my inspirations for being a "GI freak". I admit I get too involved in the "tech manual" stuff, but one needs to read a Mauldin book or "Company Commander" by Mc Donald or some such every once in a while.

I hope you get a kick out of Willie and Joe.

I am enjoying it very much so far. And by the way, I also love "Company Commander", one of those first hand accounts I just can't get enough of when it comes to history.

I have been a fan of the late Bill Mauldin, and his GI cartoons for as long as I have had interest in WW-2. I highly recommend "A Life Up Front", by Todd DePASTINO, which is the latest biography on Mauldin released this year. It is a fine book. Everyone knows, General Patton, hated Mauldin, and the author goes into great detail surrounding the meeting between the two, as Patton made it known, he had no liking for his portrayal of the enlisted soldier via his Wiile and Joe cartoons in the Stars and stripes, and thought of Sgt Mauldin as a morale breaker. The book is loaded with rare photo's and some of his best known cartoons. The same author, also presents the two volume set that Louis is talking about, that encases his entire ww-2 cartoon output into a slip-cased Willie and Joe tour deforce, that will make the reader feel as though he was in the trenches with Willie and Joe. Great stuff, that should be read by all ww-2 buffs.
