With the upcoming release of the ruined Spanish farmhouse, perhaps other structures would be of interest for Peninsular War dioramas.

During this campaign, windmills were important command locations for obvious reasons and also became focal points for some of the battles.

SO...................................how about this then;

Looks good, especially if done in the same style as the ruined wall. I like to add a bit of height to my displays or they look a bit flat on the shelves. Overall......nice one!

I would buy one just on its own merit. As well as Toy Soldiers, windmills are my thing. Spend much of my spare time travelling up and down the UK photographing windmills, be they derelict or in full working order. They fascinate me. Have done voluntary work in all sorts of mills over the last twenty years. This is a beautiful model. Hopefully they will find an excuse to make an open trestle post mill too!

Wonderful idea even for the FIW period or slightly earlier. The Osprey volume that includes French Forts in Quebec has numerous references to windmills. Perfect for Iroquois raiding french settlements.

I like it, too. Windmills featured in the landscape in battles in the Seven Years War, too, albeit of slightly different design. I've had it in mind to tackle building one. I'm wondering now how different the designs were from one area of Europe to the next.

Prost!

I like it a lot.:smile2: There are windmills all over Europe, and the Hudson and Allen Eastern-Europe Diorama with a windmill I purchased two Chicago Shows ago is one of my favorites.

Hi Isandlwana, this must be the ultimate niche market - model soldier related windmills! Have to agree though, I often pass a windmill in Wiltshire and they do hold a certain fascination.

Yes. Please check out my newest for sale thread if you have type A- blood and need any organ.

In checking the Osprey volume on Quebec forts (Fortress 27), 10 windmill strongpoints are shown in the immediate 30 mile area around Montreal. These "stone windwills were frequently used by miltiamen as watch towers and strongpoints." Iroquois frequently raided the French settlements in the late 1600s.

"By late 1686, Fort Senneville also featured a high stone windmill that doubled as a watch tower, its position on a hill offering a commanding view of the Ottawa River, the Lake of Two Mountains and the mouth of the smaller Des Prairies River. This windmill was like no other in New France: it had verty thick walls, small square loopholes for muskets, and at the top, projections of masonary facing down - the machicolations of medieval castles in Europe - to enable lethal liquids and rocks to be dropped on any attackers".

In 1691, the Iroquois burned down Fort Senneville, leaving only the stone windmill standing.

Not asking for the machicolations, but I think small windows in the upper third of the structure might be appropriate. I would not put windows on the ground level. The watch tower aspect is very appealing.

Would this be Wilton's lovely windmill by any chance? It was featured in The Victorian Farm on BBC.

I learned very quickly not to say that Kentish and Sussex windmills have sails. They are referred to as 'sweeps' in this part of the world and woe betide anyone that calls them otherwise!!!
