Have been watching this series which was first produced by the BBC in the 1970s about the RFC in WW1. All 25 episodes have now been released on DVD and are well worth the purchase. Excellent flying sequences including a Farman Longhorn and BE2Cs.

I am a huge WW1 aviation enthusiast and I have never even heard of this series. Hawker, Ball, Mannock, McCudden, 56 Squadron, and the rest are all heroes of mine. Any possibility this is US compatible? I must start searching for this. -- lancer

Lancer, must stress that this is a fictional series although the aircraft are genuine. The story centres around the members of a squadron and their families. Other notable flying incidents include a Zeppelin and a Fokker eindecker. One or two of the sub plots are a little far fetched but overall it is well worth watching.

Trooper, thanks for the additional info, but if it WW1 aviation, that is enough for me. I will go out of my way for any story line on this subject.:D -- lancer

Good call Trooper! Got mine on my Crimble list and looking forward to watching an episode or two after HRH and the pud whilst everyone else is snoozing.

If I remember rightly, it was a BBC production over 2 series reaching 25 episodes. It is set in 1914 and features a BE2 squadron tasked with dealing with the threat of the new Fokker Eindeckers. Most of the flying was done with RC Model Aircraft and the odd Tiger Moth I think.

As usual with such programmes, there is an underlying theme of class distinction betwen the characters, which is typical I suppose for most Great War stories relating to the struggle against the "Beastly Hun"

YouTube have excerpts from the series

Flambards is another TV series based around the early days of aviation.

Tally Ho........:D

As far as I'm aware its only available in the UK on region 2 format for European Region or multi-region DVD players.

Lancer, as you are keen on WW1 aviation if you ever come over to the Old Country you must see (A) The Imperial War Museum, (B) The RAF Museum at Hendon, and (C) The Shuttleworth Collection at Biggleswade. Suggest you Google The Shuttleworth Collection as there are numerous sites with a lot of photographs. They have flying days when the weather is compatible and even fly an old Bleriot which still has it's original engine made in 1909! Also on display there is a large collection of contemporary vehicles both motorised and horse drawn. Well worth a visit.
