Does anyone here know for sure the color of Winston Churchill's hores that he rode in the charge at Omdurman?

In the movie "Young Winston" and the Trophy figure both have him riding a grey horse. (White w/dark grey markings)

Is there any place where it's documented?

Thanks for the help.

Hi skeeterbuck,

"The Gray Arab of Winston Churchill"

You may find this reference of some help:

http://books.google.com.sg/books?id...snum=3&ved=0CA8Q6AEwAjgK#v=onepage&q=&f=false

I am not able to find a good photograph, sorry.

Best Regards, Raymond.

Thanks Randy that's a big help. :D

Now if I could just locate a pic that would complete this puzzle. The problem with Arabian Gray's is that they come in a wide varity of markings. I wonder if there even is a pic of his horse.

Hi skeeterbuck,

I have managed to find a picture of Lt. Churchill on his horse.

Unfortunately, the image quality is not too good.

It is a black and white photograph with some discolouration.

I hope you have better luck.

Best Regards, Raymond.

Thanks again Raymond! :D

Did you get that pic off the internet or from a book?

Even though the pic is not the greatest, at least you can tell that the horse doesn't seem to have very defined markings. Also, Winston's tunic appears to be rather dark compared the the horse anyway.

Hi Chuck,

I did a Google search with "winston churchill horse omdurman"

Here is the link:

Hope that helps.

Best, Raymond:)

Was the name of his horse Arab or was the breed an Arab. If the latter I don't think that is an Arab.

I think it spoke English, so it wasn't Arab, maybe Scotch?
LOL Mike, that is a good one.

Interestingly it seems the horse was of the Arabian breed, bred and trained for polo in England. It also turns out that Winston called him Arab; not very imaginative for such a future notable orator and man of letters. From that picture, it very well could have been a pure Arabian or an Arabian / cross and was apparently as quick and catlike as any polo pony could be. From the account of that charge it seems England and the world owe quite a bit to that sure footed little horse; but for its agility, the rider would have been lost, but for the rider, a country might have been lost..........;):D

Well said indeed! He was quite lucky with his selection of horse and that his section was on the far right of the line and wasnt in the deepset part of the Mahdist Infantry. Still it must have been quite a surprise when they all showed up.

You can just imagine the 21st Lancers clearing the ridge of the ravine and upon the Mahdi's troops. I sure the first thing that entered their minds was "Oh s**t".
