Winter Tiger Dio (1 Viewer)

Does that mean that WS043 is the wrong scale too,the model of the tiger whether it be initial, early, mid or late has no relevance to size ,all tigers were the same size and weight throughout the war.The drivers head on the winter mid version is higher than the top of the mantlet, dont think i have ever seen a photo of such an occurence, yet the radio operators head on the tunisian tiger is way below the top of the mantlet, which is more accurate imo.Hope someone can compare both tigers soon.

This topic has been discussed before when I wanted to know how the Figarti Tiger and Collectors Showcase Marder III compared in scale to K&C Tigers. We found that the "early" Tigers, meaning the Tigers K&C made first, specifically the Winter Tiger and Whittmann's Last Tiger are actually about 1/32 scale. They match up perfectly with the Figarti Tiger which is really 1/32 scale.

The "later" Tigers meaning the ones made by K&C most recently, specifically the Tunisian Tiger are 1/30 scale and are clearly bigger than the earlier Tigers or the Figarti Tiger.

Note: Early and late refers to when K&C came out with the model. It does not refer to a early war/late war versions of Tigers. You are correct that all tigers were the same size throughout the war. The crew figures are correctly scaled to the scale of the Tiger but the differences between 1/32 and 1/30 scale are hard to see if you compare crew figures. I have all of the above models and have done side by side comparisons.

Here are some photos. (Whoops - forgot that one of the Tigers was on a mouse pad. You will have to make allowances.) The man in the drivers hatch of the Winter Tiger is tall and skinny vs the radio operator in the Tunisian Tiger, who is short and chubby. The man in the drivers hatch of the Winter Tiger could by lower in the hatch but the model's floor and his elbow prevents that. That crew figure fits better in the second turret hatch of the Winter Tiger.

warrior the scale is the issue ,especially if its incorrect, the tigers being retired is irrelevent, collectors can still buy them, and we should all know if the scale is right or wrong . If i bought the winter tiger then the tunisian tiger which is truer to scale,i would be a little puzzled to why one is smaller than the other, wouldnt you? but lancer has cleared this up ,On a side issue DAS REICH was the 8th s.SS panzer kompanie and would therefore not have numbered its tanks as the 4th kompanie, which were LAH and Totenkopf. The style of the numerals against a grey background look typical of LAH not DAS REICH as represented and the tiger would be an early version not a mid production version, but hey they still look good to most people, even tho the smaller inaccurate tiger commands such an inflated price for what it is,imo.

Warrior thanks for the pictures both look great but i would personally prefer the tunisian tiger ,youre so lucky to have both as i have none of them, they are like hens teeth over here.

It's Phantom warrior ;) and hen's teeth are a different scale again. :D

Very good dio. Tells the story. Nice trees and snow. Made it yourself?

Richard.
Richard,

The double tree is a build-a-rama item, the other spruce tree and the bushes are from JG miniatures, and the base was scratch built/painted.

forlornhoper - If you want a correct 1/30 scale KC Tiger I, the Tunisian version is your tank. Without starting a whole KC vs. whoever thing, Collectors Showcase also makes a correct 1/30 scale Tiger I in Normandy and winter versions and it is a very good model. The first KC set I ever puchased was WS025, a Tiger I with white #131 turret number. It is the same size as WS043 & WS070, which is to say, 1/32. I still have it on display with my other German 1/30 armor, but in the back where it's smaller size is less obvious. My KC Tiger II and CS Tiger I overpower WS025 sizewise, but it still mixes in alright as a support piece. -- lancer

Many thanks Lancer, for your advice, iam coming from a 1.35th scale plastic and diecast background,so toy soldiers and this scale is very new to me as a collector, but really enjyoing it all ,so far.

And that is your problem regarding toy soldiers, that you come from a 1/35th scale modeling background, where all 1/35th scale models are the same size, all 1/32nd scale models are the same size, or are they? As a 1/72nd scale modeler, Hasegawa 1/72nd scale models are HUGE, closer to 1/60th scale than 1/72nd.

My advice where you are new to this is buy what you like and don't get all hung up on scale, just buy the sets and vehicles you like as in the end, they only have to look right to you................
