Just got done reading for about the third time " With the Old Breed, at Peleliu & Okinawa, by E.B. Sledge.
Has to be one of the best books on WW2 from a Marine grunt point of view.
If I hadn't already bought them, I would have got all of K&C,s WW2 Marines after reading this.

Gary: I have that book and will probably re-read it soon. I noticed he was on that PBS War series before he passed away. I know his son went to Pellieiu to tour the island. Leadmen

John, that series "The War" is what reminded me of the book.
I didn,t know the author died.
Again, what a great book.

That was one of the first books to give a first-hand account from the soldier's point of view, gritty, realistic, now copied by many others. Although Pacific War specific, the emotions described could apply to any campaign in any ear. It was required reading for a WWII university course I took in the early '80s.
