On my Sabaton thread (exploring their heavy metal music with military themes) I just posted the song 'Inmate 4859,' which is about Witold Pikecki,

I'd never heard of Witold, so I did a bit of research to track him down. What...a...story!

Witold got wrapped in WWI in Poland, and in WWII his unit was overwhelmed in the invasion of Poland. Doing some underground work, he VOLUNTEERED to be captured and become a prisoner at Auschwitz.

Seriously...who volunteers to go to Auschwitz?!?

He organized people in the camp, hoping for a rescue mission to come free them. When it didn't come, he escaped, taking word of the atrocities with him.

Witold took part in the Warsaw Uprising after he escaped.

As a way of 'thanking' him for his service, his own government arrested him in 1947 and executed him after a show trial in 1948.

What a hero!

Had anyone else heard his story?

There are many brave Polish heroes.

Last week the Daily Beast had the story of Jan Karski from Lodz who tried to inform the world of the Holocaust, but no one believed him.

See Jan Karski.

He was a real hero! Too bad he stayed in Poland and was killed by the psydo-polish communist government.

Thankfully they are beginning to recognize these heroes in Poland.

Not killed by his own governement but by order of the Russian who didn' want to have such a dangerous potential ennemy arround them .
Remember in 39, Russia invaded Poland with Germany, and directly killed almost all officers of the Polish army ( early 40v ) at Katyn

Hi guys,

Have to disagree a little here. He was killed by the order of the communist government that took over in Poland after the war ended. This topic was one I dug into while living there the past three years. There are some books on the topic finally being printed in English so if you look you can find there. I am away from home right now but when I get home I will put the title of a good one up here so you all can try and find it to read. There was an active resistance to the communists that wasn't destroyed until 1955 in Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania that was basically ignored in the west. But that is a topic for another thread.
