Currently watching this series, although I,ve seen it numerous times, I think that this is the best WW2 documentory.
It is British made so it shows the war pretty much from the British perspective, but still, the best as I see it.
Also watching the "Honeymooners", that series is 50 years old but it is as funny now as it was in the 50,s.
Being retired I have time for these sort of things!
After I,m done with these it,s time to revisit the Sopranos, my all time favorite.

Great Series, I love the theme song, I received it for christmas several years

ago and have only watched one episode......maybe this thread will help me

get into it again!

Yeah, I am now watching my local PBS station of Oliver Twist, not as historical as World at War nor as bloody, but it is a theme that K&C did with the Dickens series of characters and a few buildings. Neat stuff. Highly recommend that everyone watch it to get a break from war and economic issues.

Barnes & Noble recently had the entire series on sale for about $60 or so. I remember it had a great narrator. A bit biased in presentation, but still fun to watch.

Excellent series. Picked it up as soon as it was released.
I'd like to see a release of the show Battlefield that came out in the 90's.
Covered great battles such as Normandy,Stalingrad, Battle of Britain Etc.

None other than Sir Larry himself, Sir Lawrence Olivier, if I remember correctly. I'll have to check over at the IMDb.

I agree with all of you, I watched this series back in the 70's, I think PBS aired it here in the States. It was the greatest documentary that I had even seen, and I still think it holds up, even compared to documentaries in the new style set by Ken Burns with "The Civil War" (which use famous actors to voice historical figures, for example, or live re-enactment footage).

I have it on my long wish list of DVDs to get (right behind, "I, Claudius" and the RSC's "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby")

Prost!

Brad,

No need to check. It was Sir Lawrence Olivier as the Narrator.

The core series was 26 episodes in all.

Some were more "watchable" than other and kept me glued to my seat.

Best, R.

I enjoyed this series, but my favorite when I was little was Victory at Sea.

Another good series is The Great War. Originally produced by the BBC in 26 episodes with all the jerky film exerpts rescaled to appear more natural. Some excellent shots of the Imperial German army in full dress just prior to the war and lots of German, Russian, French and Italian newsreel film in addition to the British.

Hi Guys,

This British series was and still is, one of the finest documentary series ever produced… I’m a bit puzzled however by Combat’s assertion that it was “a bit biased in presentation”… In what way? Can you please elaborate?

Anyway… superb viewing… well crafted… and very, very informative.

Best wishes and happy viewing!
Andy C.

P.S. If any of you get the chance seek out a 3 part dramatized documentary by the BBC called “DUNKIRK”… also excellent!

Yes Dunkirk was very enjoyable, gets shown on the History channel now and again.Shows the BBC can still deliver the goods sometimes.I think they also did a docu/drama about the count down to D Day that was very good too.

I fully agree. I am fortunate enough to have both, and surely these are both BBC pearls, History and documentary at its very best.

I second this. What kind of bias? It looked pretty much objective and impartial to me, in the best BBC tradition.
