From 1884 to 1914, Germany maintained northeastern Papua New Guinea as one of its Pacific colonies. When war broke out in Europe in 1914, an Australian military expedition was sent to New Guinea and overthrew the German government there. In this period photograph, we see a German Army Private of the Colonial Reserve giving firearms instruction to a New Guinea Native Militia Conscript prior to the Australian invasion.

Hey Randy, don't know how I missed this thread when it was first posted, but very nice job on a really unusual subject. -- Al

Simply OUTSTANDING! You might take a look at my collection posted as Visiting Bayern's Toy Soldier and Militaria Museum for a great deal of German Colonial figures. :)

Ludwig!!
