So I was in New Orleans a few weeks ago and I took the time to visit the WWII Museum there. No one else in my 'party' was really interested so I went by myself - which was fine with me in the end! I dragged some unwilling participants through a few Art Museums and that really kills the experience when someone is whining . . . . :rolleyes2:

Quite an experience whether or not you are interested in this era or not. Definitely needs a day to see it all especially if you want to watch the movies in addition to the interactive videos and stations throughout the buildings.

I am more of a sucker for the Airplanes and the such as my great uncle was a pilot in WWII. He unfortunately 'wore-out' (his words) in February of this year and is missed. I have edited part of his Memoirs if anyone is interested in perusing them.
He flew & survived 33 missions and was in the air on D-Day as well.

Arnold was my Grandpa - he was 17 years older than Mel.

I will add a few pic from the museum itself in the next posts!

Hi Julie,

Looks like a pretty cool museum. Thanks for sharing the story about your great uncle. You were lucky he was around for so long. I hope you can get his book squared away and perhaps published. The Stories from that era are amazing and need to be preserved especially some who flew that many missions.

Julie, thanks for posting the diary. I found it most fascinating. Fortunate he left his story as he is correct about questions unasked or unanswered. Never was able to get my father to write or verbalize his experiences in the war beyond a few basics and some photos. The written record is invaluable. Found the recounting of the flight to England and later, the return on the Aquatania after his tour, to be very interesting. He wrote a very detailed history of his life without embellishment. It is a great family heirloom. -- Al

Hi Julie,

thanks for posting these pictures of your museum visit and, of course, the diary of your Great Uncle.
A most interesting read.

When in New Orleans last year, just about a few days before the actual Mardi Gras, and with a group of four, I also took some time by myself and went to visit the museum.
I enjoyed the vast displays and movies for several hours, which would not have happened if my wife and friends would have gone with me :smile2:

Nice images Julie, thanks for posting these.

Will look at the diaries too, very interesting I imagine.

My Dad was RAF in WW2 but not a flyer. Paula's Grandfather and Great Uncle both worked with Fir Frank Whittle and were part of the team that created the Jet engine! One of them flew to the USA during the war with Whittle for a meeting at the White Hoyse!

Nice pic's Jules and the museum looks great. I visited New Orleans many, many moons ago and it's a pity I didn't know about this place otherwise I would have put it on my places to visit.

Looks like a pirate hit my thread (Warrrrr - whoops!)

Glad those of you who read his words enjoyed them! I have thought about whether or not to post this for quite some time and after my trip, I decided to share.

Lots of fun stuff to see in that city of New Orleans -- I even got around to hanging the art I bought from some fun street artists this past weekend! Great conversations with very nice people :)

My fun mini-take on the city:

This city has the best Fire Hydrants . . . loads of character to go with the architecture!

Totally fits! {sm4}

I was there 4 years ago and it is clear they have beefed up the displays and added more in the Museum. I would highly recommend going here if you are near New Orleans !

What a great day to remember and bump this one! I still have part of his "Living a Dream" memoirs up if you want to read or re-read :)

Thanks for bringing this thread forward. The memoirs are a fascinating read, and I hope to be able to visit that museum some day.
