The coverage of lesser covered units is what made got me hooked.
I've been harping on this for years.
As a TRUE Napoleonics collector, I've got French, British, Russian, Prussian and Austrian figures in my 20mm collection.
However, I also have Dutch, Belgian, Nassau, Hanovarian, Spanish, Portuguese, Bavarian, Wurttemburg, Polish, Westphalian, Baden and Hesse Darmstadt figures too, close to 10,000 figures (yes fellas, I've got a problem...............:wink2:...................).
I love any and all Napoleonics.
The problem with Napoleonic toy soldiers is the main focus has been French and British, ie, Waterloo, Waterloo, couldn't escape if I wanted to................(sorry, that ABBA song kicked in)...............
First Legion has addressed this with a wider variety of figures, K & C has done Russians in the past, JJD has done Portuguese, Kronprinz has dabbled with other nationalities, Britains has done Nassau troops and Brunswickers.
As a matter of fact, I get calls all the time on the Britains Nassau troops that are now out of production. I am hoping that Britains will do Dutch/Belgians, more Nassau troops and Hanovarians to expand on their Napoleonics range.
I guess the main issue is the concern the lesser known nationalities (ie, anything other than British and French) won't sell, then the manufacturers have invested time and money into a failed venture.
All I know is I sold raftloads of Kronprinz Prussian militia, Austrians in crested helmets and had a long list of preorders in on the Austerlitz Italians until the plug got pulled on my distributorship.
Look at Cold Steel; he's done some wonderful Peninsular war themed British and French, yet sales are a bit slow. Collectors who ask for such things need to put their money where their mouths are, not say "Oh gee, those Empress Dragoons are beautiful, but I'm waiting for Cuirassiers/Hussars/line lancers/whatever so as to not have to actually buy the dragoons"..............
Same with JJD; he did a nice range of Peninsular War figures, namely Portuguese and the sales have not exactly set the world on fire; where else are you going to get them if you are a Peninsular war enthusiast?
Hopefully First Legion will continue to expand their Napoleonic offerings as they have the largest current catalog of Napoleonics.
Maybe Matt can address the issue of lesser represented nationalities.
