This may have been posted before but here are photos showing scenes of WW II (mostly Normandy) and what the same place looks like today.

The contrast between the strife and the peacefulness today is stark. When I visited Normandy in 2004, that was the feeling I had.

If you look at photos of Warsaw, Minsk, Koenigsberg, Berlin in 1945 and today, the contrast is much starker

I can well imagine. Those cities suffered horribly compared to towns in the far west.
