I did a little collecting and assembled a set of "Atlas" pewter figures representing a French 75mm gun in tow with the limber, six horses and two men. The Atlas figures seem to be perhaps a 1:28 scale. I am not really sure.

I spent a few weeks painting everything here as the Atlas products are bare pewter in their original form. I really didn't keep track of the time I put in, but it went quickly as I enjoyed doing the set. The last item I am considering is the harness set that would attach the team to the limber.

Honestly, I have about $80 dollars invested in the models themselves. I was considering selling the set. I guess I am wondering, would this set be something collectors would be interested in or due to it being a recent manufacture and "non-professionally painted" set, not a real contender in the toy soldier world?

Curious about opinions and input about this. Thanks.

Tom

You did a very nice job with the painting, and it's a great set. I think it is missing the caisson, but I am sure collectors would be interested.

Thanks guys. I do have a caisson I painted to match. I wasn't sure if that was drawn separately from the gun and limber or not. Did they have all three in one draft?

Very Good paint job!

The guys who run Atlas are to be commended for re-issuing so much of the old "MHSP" material. I hope they can be encouraged to do "the lot"!

If you have access to the Funcken book:"Arms and Uniforms of the First World War" Vol 2; go to page 80 for a Chapter on the "Famous French Seventy Five"

On page 81 you will see illustrations of the Gun "en train". These clearly illustrate that the Caisson was drawn separately from the Gun, both having their own team, and Limber. "Six Horsepower" might look impressive, but it couldn't pull a lot really!

I couldn't see the three "Conductors" in your photos. The 2 guys on the Limber aren't there to drive it, they are just passengers. The French Gun teams, like every other countries Artillery arm, were "Postillion" driven.

So, you are not quite finished yet. The three "Conductors, Postillions, Drivers" of the near side horses, are a must. If you want to be authentic, you should invest in another team and limber, etc, for the Caisson. My God! how impressive will that look?

Happy painting!

Hmm, interesting suggestion. I have the second limber and caisson already, but I am lacking five more horses. Also, the company which makes the figures apparently does not make the driver figures. I have been looking for some in the appropriate size, but no luck.

So, I may take on the challenge and paint another team of horses. Thanks for the kind words and the information.
