....In the Sardinia waters with 71 deads inside.

Sunday an experienced genoan diver has discovered in a corner of the sea not far from the island of Tavolara. It was one of the most sought shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.

Lost track of him in January 1943, during the Second World War, along with 71 crew members. Young sailors who are still inside the submarine. Trapped in a huge steel coffin on sardinian seabed. Died from lack of oxygen after hitting a mine field of the Italian navy.

So Massimo Bondone, after a few attempts hampered by bad weather, Sunday is set off Tavolara, while Luke Magliacca has been waiting on the surface. The sub went nearly to score after 80 meters he saw the silhouette of the submarine and then leaped. But with respect. "Now you think of the fate of those who fell to his death down there - he says -. A fate shared by many people of different flags, submariners in particular. "

The submarine of the Royal Navy is part of the Ghost Fleet. "It's those parties vessels on a mission and returned, vanished into thin air," explains Massimo Domenico Bondone. The HMS-P311, Class T, had left Malta at the end of December 1942. It was his first mission, among other things very difficult, almost suicidal. The goal was ambitious: to reach the port of La Maddalena to hit Italian cruisers "Trieste" and "Gorizia". Then a significant attack on the chessboard of the Mediterranean.
But a few days later, in early January 1943, a collision with a mine placed bench, not far from Tavolara, the Italian navy in defense of Maddalena harbor. It is said that some fishermen have heard a loud roar, during a stormy night. But none over the decades had never been able to locate the British middle.

the P311, 84 meters long and about 8 wide, is almost intact. It rests on the bottom in order of navigation and the structure is practically intact. Only the bow is damaged, because of the outbreak of the mine. It also appears clear the silhouette of a cannon positioned in front of the turret. In addition, the P311 carrying two Chariot: small assault submarines, piloted by two people, who easily could creep into enemy ports for placement of explosives on ship hulls.

The discovery is exceptional also because inside the cabin of the submarine found the bodies of British sailors. According to some reconstructions made over the years, the crew consisted of 61 plus 8 operators of the two Chariot and 2 mechanics. In all probability the compartments of the middle British were not invaded by water.

The explosion of the mine could not have affected the internal structure, which has remained sealed since January 1943. "Yes, there may be still left in the air. It thus was dying for lack of oxygen - explains Massimo Domenico Bondone -. We must bring the utmost respect for the wrecks, especially in this case. Also because, apart from death, life in a submarine was really very difficult, including tight spaces, poor living conditions and the constant fear of being hit by a torpedo or a depth charge. "

Hey Poppo ... just found this, on a lazy and rainy Saturday.
Sad but very interesting story. I have an interest in Submarine stories as you might imagine. What I can't imagine is the horror and panic that those fellows must have experienced when they realized that .... this was to be their final mission and only death awaits. :(

Thank you for posting.
