A former Syracuse University colleague and photo historian is writing a piece on Ernst Friedrich's 1924 War Against War an anti-war photo book on WWI showing what the war did to humans and animals.

She is wondering if images such as these appeared in the press (newspapers or magazines) during the war. Friedrich was German but the book was published in 4 languages.

Those are some truly horrendous photos. I sincerely doubt photos like these appeared in the mainstream press.

The only use might have been as propaganda to show the barbarism and brutality of the enemy.
Friedrich's goal was to end war.

Don't know how I missed this post. A truly disturbing book, I had a copy many years ago but didn't keep it long. It is still readily available in several editions, including a paperback as recently as 2014. -- Al
