Hi All,

It was about time that I got this going. I saw the movie Beneath Hill 60 and with great info from you lot especially Rediarmor, I decided to model a rescue attempt. It will be great practice to sculpt two intereacting figures and I look forward to sculpting all that breathing apparatus.

My original intent was to have the rescuer hug the gas victim, dragging him away, which would have hidden most of the breathing apparatus from a front view.

I decided to change the pose to that of the rescuer supporting the gas victim with one hand over his shoulder, thus allowing a good view of the breathing apparatus. I also changed the head of the rescuer to fit more in scale with the victim's head.

Logically, I should sculpt the jacket of the rescuer, followed by the breathing apparatus and then finalise the victim's pose to allow for a good fit between the pair.

Hello TomB,

Thanks. I am still in the process of modifying the poses. For the rescuer, I've already resculpted the right leg and will readjust the left leg to match it. Then I will sculpt the jacket and then the breathing apparatus. The victim will be left until later. I intend to "drape" him onto the rescuer. The hands will be last.

Hello TomB and All,

Had more inspiration and also more visual info. I use an empirical approach to sculpting, basically trial and error. After the coattails were sculpted, then the proto equipment is wrapped around the figure. Then I carve away the excess and repeat as necessary. I tried to do the goggles in one attempt. No such luck as you will see in the next posting.

Starting to improve on the finer details. I carved down the proto gear as it was protruding too much all round. I bulked up the trousers and added pockets and flaps, buttons, collars and also the goggles. The head gear is also being modelled. Hirsute chap as promised.

Headgear being sculpted and almost completed. The Proto equipment is being shaped up and detailed. Really finicky work, lots of drilling, and use of fine wire, tubing. I now think that the original pose of the tunneller dragging the victim along is more dynamic. I'll probably lower the tunneller's right arm to drag the victim along. The next few postings will show the sculpting progress.

This was the revised pose, but I am reverting to the original pose (3rd picture) of having the tunneller drag the victim as this creates a height difference and creates visual interest in the pose. Notice that I have changed the head pose on the victim.

More detailed work on the tunneller in progress, front and back. I wrote the words "Proto" just to test the font size for the final painting.

Hello TomB,

glad you like it. I gave the figures a light wash of thinned paint and pinned the figures to each other to finalise the pose before the final detail stage. The wash highlights the imperfections clearly. Rgds Victor

Hi All,

I cleaned up the figure and have given it a darker wash of colour. The position of the sleeves are being matched to the hand positions on the victim. The work on the proto equipment is very finicky, but enjoyable. Details are being added from Historex buckles, metal strips, wire, tubing etc. Still quite a lot of work to do. (next photos coming). TomB's comments on photographic distortion in closeups apply to my pics.

Coming on well Vic.....you might need to start a new thread...Tunnel two..or something like that as stuff is going to get lost in the mass of replies.....I have found reading threads on this forum...once you get x amount of replies...current replies get lost in the jumble...just a thought...regards Tom

Hi TomB,

I would prefer a single thread for each figure (I have just too many threads going on right now) and would get lost myself if I created more threads. I don't think that I will miss any replies, going by the response to this thread....:):):):).

I added goggle and head straps from metal strips.

I modelled the valves and gauges the Proto equipment, using modeller's nuts and bolts in 1/35 scale (Meng) and parts from an Italeari workshop kit. I had to carve away part of the breathing bag to accomodate this item. Once positioned and glued in place, I resculpted the breathing bag and the left arm. The tubings made from metal wire were very carefully positioned and glued onto the Proto equipment.

The ends of the arms were created with metal sheet to simulate sleeves. I added more putty to the legs to simulate baggy trousers cut.

Fair enough....everything getting together now...looking good....regards Tom

Hi All,

I've added all the straps, buckles to this figure and made some adjustments to the Proto equipment to get a better fit. I haven't yet decided where to place the hands.
Now to work on the victim.
