They've come a long way, was thrilled as a small child in Germany when I got my first clear block! We often ask where the kids can go, why would you buy expensive metal toy soldiers whe this stuff is out there? probably good that these were not around, would have been totally obsessed!
Seen some great and authentic looking armor and vehicles as well.

My son has quiet a few of the ww2 lego soldiers, plus some spec op's custom figures.
I quite often find his lego city under military rule or being over run by zombies.
