Looks like the USA is back in Iraq. ISIL is carrying out genocide. Humanitarian food drops are underway by the US and the C-130s are being escorted by F-16s. France has indicated they will contribute. Will NATO get involved? The Kurds are asking for US airstrikes and weapons. The US could find itself bombing ISIL in Syria and inadvertently helping Assad.

Several countries in North Africa and the Horn of Africa and the Arabian peninsula have become destabilized and are under threat by ISIL offshoots. They have attempted terror attacks against the US at home and against NATO counties in Europe.

Hamas is threatening to restart the war against Israel while aiding the rebels in Egyptian Saini..

And don't forget Putin in the Ukraine.

Too complex a situation to even analyze and too many hotspots for even US forces to deal with.

Is this the look of WWIII?

A very dangerous and complex world!
Bottom line is that the USA cannot go it alone and it is time for our allies to step up.
There are a lot of bad guys out there......and Ebola to top it all off.

Yes, these flare ups and the ebola virus are major concerns for the world. One or all of these conflicts could get out of hand and it could be very hard to stop or contain.

These types of regional conflicts have always gone on. With the 24-hour news cycle and need for instant news, we are inundated with bad news. It gives the constant impression that things are much worse than they really are. Everyone I talk to believes the world is falling apart. But I was just reading an article in Time magazine about how much things in the US have improved in the last decade or so. Crime rates have dropped by historic levels, the economy is doing well, new energy sources are emerging, the environment is improving, the US is producing historic levels of oil and natural gas, and on and on. Almost nothing but positive signs.

You have me at a disadvantage. Forum rules prohibit me or anyone else for that matter from
responding to that adequately.

Putin and Ebola are concerning. I don't care to get into the arguments of both sides re Gaza, but seeing all those kids dying is just not right. Both sides need to stop this now.

No, it's more the look of a thread that will get deleted in 4, 3, 2, 1.............

So you're more worried about this thread being deleted than what is going on in the world :rolleyes2:^&grin

The thread is to discuss the complexity of the military situation around the world. To me, it seems even more complex than before WWI and WWII with multiple conflicts and blurred lines between friends and foes. How can the American public be so disinterested in all the conflicts around the globe while the US military is directly involved in most of them. What better place to discuss complex military situations than on an historic military forum.

I, too, don't believe this will last long.

However, while it's up, I don't believe today is more complex than the circumstances in which the world found itself in 1914. Leading up to WW I you had the first and second Balkan Wars, rivalry between Russia and Germany in the Ottoman Empire, rivalry between Russia and England in Persia and Afghanistan, French rivalry with Germany in Morocco, etc. I haven't even gotten to Serbian irredentism in Austria-Hungary or other Balkan countries, smoldering Russian anger at Austria for the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. 1914 was just as complex as today if not more.

Excellent points Brad. I think the only real difference between then and now is the fact that information is disseminated so much quicker. During the events leading up to WWI you couldn’t log onto Google news to instantly find out the latest news, you had to wait (sometimes weeks) to get information.

The internet and modern communications have changed the way we see the world.

Because it's not a historic military forum; it's a toy soldier forum.

And threads like this usually digress into morass of buffoonery.

Buffoonery and toy soldiers do not mix.

But have at it Terry.

True Brad but no one had nuclear weapons back then......nor cable news and the internet!

Digression is a strong possibility I agree but I think our hobby is based on history....not like collecting dolls or trains.
Without military conflicts there would be no "toy soldiers/military miniatures".
A shame we can't stick to the military side of the equation without politics and emotions kicking in.

This ISIS lot are one mob of deadly and crazy religious fruit loops that are even to out there for the likes of Al-Qaeda, like some nightmare virus they need to be cauterized for the sake of the human race.

That may be more difficult than it seems. Between Prime Minister Maliki corruption and Obama not arming the Kurds, it may be too late to stop the atrocities. It's forced the US into a defensive air war and despite Obama's assurances, there are already US boots on the ground and elite Iranian troops in Baghdad organizing it's defence.

It's a measure of how bad this mob are if the Iranians and the Yanks are together against them! Like cats and dogs living together.....{sm2}
