I have just received my Xmas Special Castings from Replica Metal Soldiers & Models - and couldn't be more pleased with them.

The set is titled "Life in the Army - The Garrison Christmas Waits" [As I understand it, the old term "Waites ( modern spelling Waits) derives from an old practice of musicians (singers) patrolling cities and larger towns in Great Britain and marking the hours by playing or singing at certain times of the night.] Very restful!

This set comprises six Victorian Guardsmen, in Cape Order - along with an Officer who is conducting them - plus a Christmas tree. The guys are singing Xmas Carols to entertain the Garrison where they are stationed. One of the Guardsmen is clearly a non-singer, as he is there to hold a lantern for the others to better see their music.

I understand from Andrew (proprietor) that this set was originally made by Roy Dilley - as a Xmas present for his son, but due to demand from friends - it was later released in a limited run for purchase. If you like what you see - and want a set too - better get in quickly - as this is a limited run once again, and will be withdrawn after Xmas Eve.

As you may be able to see from the pic attached - there is a tiny amount of construction involved with these castings - as the visible hands hold baton ( for the conductor), carol booklets for the singer and a lantern for illumination. Just a matter of plugging these in with a spot of glue to retain them. In accordance with my usual practice - I will paint the bodies first before doing this.

Keep watching - and I'll show you how I get on, from time to time. Shouldn't be too long - as these are destined to go under our own Xmas tree, so will be jumping the queue of stuff I have in hand, a bit! jb

Cheers Mike - couldn't resist them.

Already started - faces first ................... now clear off - I'm in a hurry................:D jb

( P.S. Thanks for the painting guide:salute::)

John...

you paint them anyway you want...they are actually kind of drab looking in the manufacturer's choice of colors...maybe a more vibrant choice of colors would make the figures "pop" a little more...whatever you decide...I have followed your work long enough to know they will turn out nice...

now get back to work...you're running out of time...^&grin

I took this photo at the London show last Saturday, I had a chat with Andrew - nice bloke!

Looking forward to seeing your set JB.

Jeff :salute::

Cheers again Mike. Snag is - I quite liked them looking like that - and you can't take too many liberties with uniform. I'll just do the best job that I can, whilst retaining the uniform of the time (Victorian). I just think they are charming.

I may try to jazz 'em up a little with maybe a brighter red - but the main colour is Navy Blue. I'll also use a "High Gloss" technique on them - so they will be glossy alright - and hopefully get that "pop"

We shall see. jb

Hi Jeff - thanks for the pics - I did look 'em up - and thanks for remembering my request for pics.

As with you Jeff - Andrew and I became friends via this forum - and I became an Internet customer of his shortly afterwards. We both found that we had an interest in some of the "Ancient Britains" - such as the smaller scale "B" range - which Andrew is also developing for the future - which I wish him every success with.

I have just put down the brush for tonight - but these little beauties are progressing nicely already - so I will take some progress pics later.

I think they will look dandy - either under or near to our tree this year. Keeeeeeep watching.

I know that feeling well, Dave. You certainly won't regret your purchase - as mine are painting up beautifully. Also excellent value for the money, as they work out at less than a fiver for each piece.

Best of luck with them. jb

wow JB...you're fast...and they do look great!

Hi Mike - yes these are flying............I think it's because the bulk of the paintwork (cape and pants) are Navy blue. They are also beautifully cast - so there isn't much in the way of prep to do - plus, I'm really enjoying them. My wife (The Commandant), had to prise me away from them to have a spot of lunch - and later on Dinner.....so.........I've spent most of today painting them.

It will be so nice to have something in my collection that Roy Dilley created - I have long wanted a piece or two from him in my collection - and now thanks to Andrew - I will have. jb

Looking great Johnny! I am really excited to get a set of these only mine are the Ghurka set already painted. They will look great with my other Christmas sets. Looking forward to seeing your set completed!

I haven't seen a Gurkha Xmas set in the Replica catalogue Dave - tell us more - preferably with a pic or two? jb

I will post pictures once the set arrives.

Dave

Thanks Dave - I'm quite taken with the concept of "Xmas sets" - as castings, that is - I have seen some of the Trophy ones - but they were never an option for me - as they come ready painted - and they are getting too difficult to source as well as pricey anyway.

Cheers - jb

Finally got around to finishing off my Carol singers. It's late - so here's a quick pic of them. jb

Thanks Mike - glad you like 'em. They were very enjoyable and really nice to paint up - and I might have been even quicker, had I not had other things on my mind - such as making up a limber for a small sized gun.

We should be picking up our Xmas Tree, some-time this week, so these will be going alongside it at some point in the near future.

Those came out beautifully, John! As all of your figures do, of course!

What is the story with the cap bands? Are the singers from each of the Guards regiments?

Prost!
Brad
