I’ve been quiet on this forum lately and thought I might post images of two mounted figures I recently finished courtesy of Brian Harrison (Yeomanry Miniatures). I contacted Brian last year about some figures and mentioned that I would like a mounted Scottish Horse trooper from the Boer War. The second regiment of Scottish Horse drew a large number of volunteers of Scottish descent from Australia, many of whom would later serve in the First A.I.F.
Brian replied that he could help me if I provided some uniform details, which I did. The Scottish Horse wore a slouch hat with a distinctive black cock tail feathers worn on the left side. Brian had a head sculpted with this hat and the rest of the uniform is standard KD that other mounted units wore during the Boer War.
The figure I gather was originally a lancer figure and the chain shoulder wear had to be removed to get the tunic looking right. Apart from that the kit assembles well and the reins in particular (which are also made of the casting metal) are relatively simple to fit and look good once in place.
Along with the Scottish Horse trooper I also assembled and painted WW-11, an N.C.O/trooper of the Australian Light Horse 1916-18. I painted the shoulder patches of the 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment on this figure, a NSW regiment. Both figures were finished off with several coats of Testors Glosscote to match the finish of other Boer War/WW1 figures I have made.
Both kits required a fair bit of time and attention to build and paint and tested my skills in some areas. However I’m very happy with how they turned out and will be adding some more Yeomanry figures to my collection in the future.
Still painting.
