Hi All,

I was wallowing in nostalgia over the weekend. Saw these three oldies.

Really lovely movies.

Scaramouche in great technicolour has several great fight scenes - I actually prefer Mel Ferrer's swordplay to Stewart Granger's. Also I prefer Eleanor Parker to Vivien Leigh - sigh! The costumes of the hussars are not bad.

Villa rides has great character playing by Yul Brynner. Robert Mitchum sleepwalks through the movie. The bandido plot is really interesting and it could have been an epic. The best scene is the charge of the bandits over the shallow river.

Zorba The Greek - I had remembered this b&w as a boring movie when I was a kid. It's actually quite mesmerizing albeit a little complex and with adult themes. A truly period movie.

I saw them too I really was impressed with Stewart Garanger's doing his own stunts and how he avoided a stage mishap which would have killed him, I recorded moon fleet for latter.

Cheers

Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas had a special magic in Zorba. Perhaps the Guns of Navarone led to their being reunited in Zorba. I haven't seen Zorba in three or four years but it's a wonderful movie.

Since you mentioned Villa Rides, you might enjoy Viva Zapata, which stars Quinn and Marlon Brando. Terrific movie.

Don't miss 1934's Viva Villa!, starring Wallace Beery as Villa. It was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Picture. It influenced Viva Zapata!. -- Al

I have Viva Zapata. Don't have 1934 Viva Villa.

In Zorba the Greek, I was most impressed with the actress Lila Kedrova playing the old French madam. Irene Papas does frumpy widow perfectly.
