I was hoping some of our resident Zulu War experts could share some information about the appearance of a couple of British units present during Chelmsford's second invasion. Spcifically, wondering about the uniform appearance of 94th Regiment of Foot, and to a lesser degree about the 2/21st Royal Scots Fusiliers. For the latter I've found a few colour plates in an Osprey book and numerous b&w photos, but almost nothing on the 94th. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

For the 94th there is the Osprey on the Connaught Rangers that includes their service in South Africa. Unfortunately this title has not been google-previewed so I am not able to see the plates. For the Royal Scots Fusiliers I assume you saw plate J on the Battle of Ulundi in the Osprey British Forces in Zululand 1879?

Mister Dave,

Not sure this helps your inquiry, but since the 2/21st Royal Scots Fusiliers were mentioned, I decided to post a picture of a South Africa Campaign medals which was given to soldiers who served in SA during this time period.
The close-ups are from the 2/21st Foot medal.

The medal on the right inscription reads:
938, PTE W. Higgins, 2/21st Foot.

The medal on the left inscription reads:
1166 PTE W. Wickett, 57 Foot.

I always wanted to research these soldiers. Does anyone have know of the website where one can do research on the records of individual soldiers.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian, you could try either www.ancestry.co.uk/military or
www.veterans-uk.com/service_records/army.html-15k You might also be able to gather more information by contacting the regimental museums for the 21st Foot www.rhf.org.uk (Email sssregs@rhf.org.uk)

Dave,
The uniforms of both are fairly elusive. Tim Reese compiled all in pdf format, which I'll try to post for you, if I can figure it out.
Mike

Hello Randy,

Yes, you are correct, sir! :)

Ah, thank you gentlmen for the feedback. Not surprisingly the Royal Scots Fusiliers are faced in blue, and it looks like the 94th Regt. is wearing green facings in those plates you've posted, Mike....am I seeing that correctly?

I have been looking at the composition of 'the square' at Ulundi and note that the 17th Lancers and KDG's left the square between these 2 units, hence my questions.

Cheers all,
MD

The 94th Facings are a foresty green. The KDG (all 24)were let out through the front face of 80th with Buller's men. Do you have something up your sleeve:rolleyes:?
