I saw this auction today:

CURRAHEE: Rare WW2 506th Paracute DI, German made- Excl

The auction says its WWII era but also that it was made in Germany. Is this accurate? Why would the US Army have had anything military produced in Germany? Especially with WPA and obvious security information leaking out about types of units and locations of training.

Anybody know?

I did a quick goggle and one site says the pin with that type of back is German or Austrian origin from 1945.

From a Military forum it is the consensus that they are Austrian.

Apparently they only spent a week in Germany before moving on to Austria.

Seems as though there are 4 types 2 British and 2 Austrian (the Austrian ones tend to loose their finish however).

Be interesting to see what other members can find.

A lot of pins were theater made after the war. They are different by their finish and type of pinback or clutch attachment. I had a theater made Combat Infantry Badge at one time. The pins usually are inferior in finish and have more worn look to them.

That was my take on it as well. Who would have guessed that it would have gone for so much $$$ I know when I was in Korea, we could get "Kimchi" tags- Korean made nametags for our uniforms.
