Sandbags please? (1 Viewer)

I am in the process of making a small diorama of Britains Charge of the Light Brigade & the Russian canons, and was wondering if anyone knew any manufacturers where I could get sandbag entrenchments for the canons. I would want the wall high enough so that a soldier standing firing has some cover, but low enough in spots so that a soldier kneeling and firing and the canon muzzle clears the wall. Thanks for any help you can give.

I have found a sandbag emplacement at Treefrog Treasures. It is made by Build-A-Rama (BAR029). However I am unsure on how tall it is. I have attached a wed site with pictures to give an idea on how tall it is.

Dick, While some of the canon at some of the battles were partly behind dirt mounds, there were no sand bags or dirt mounds at the North Valley field battery being charged.

Thanks for the information -- so now I have a choice -- take some poetic license with the sandbags, or go into my garden and get some entrenchment materials.

I agree with Lenswerks instead Build-A-Rama's Gun Emplacement (BAR026) would work just as well and it is historically accurate. I have attached a web site with a picture.

I just looked at Errol Flynn's charge on Youtube and sure enough they have earth works made out of a combination of sandbags, earth, stones, and sticks, etc.

Hi Dick,

They would have been using Gabions with wood and rock retaining walls inbetween the gabions. There are bunch of these available from the folks here at TF so I would take a look in the on line shop.

Nothing I've read so far, nor the period art work indicate there was any type of sandbags, gabions or earthworks at those canon. I stand by my canons on this one.

In reading the accounts - heavy smoke and such, they ride past the canon.

It's just my observation, perhaps the experts have some information they can share.

If you don't have it already, pick up the Opsrey book Campaign #6, Balaclava 1854, The charge of the Light Brigade. Highly recommended.
