Hi Guys,

Over the weekend I was mulling over the latest batch of questions and comments on Treefrog and thought I’d take this opportunity to reply.

1. Redo The Seaforths…
I would love to and… seriously considered it for Chicago this year. As often happens in this business other ideas and priorities came up and took over and this particular project got put on the “back-burner”. However it is very dear to my heart and we will revisit it in the future… I’d love personally to see our Highlanders with the new sculpting and matt paint style… don’t despair!

2. Diorama Enquiry
Very sincere apologies to “Noli Poli” about the lack of K&C response on his enquiry about several diorama possibilities. I checked up with Tammi here in head office and she is preparing a reply and a quotation to go out later today (Monday 8th.September HK time).
Gordon handles the “artistic” side of the K&C Workshop’s displays and dioramas. Tammi… the business side. We apologize once more for the delay!

3. Stop Releasing More Shermans, Tigers etc. etc.
Well boys and girls…Shermans… Tigers and Panthers sell! Pure and simple… Why else do you think Figarti, Honour Bound and New Model Army followed K&C down that particular road!
New collectors come on stream every single day and many of them want the “classics” of WW2 Armour. Often, at the beginning anyway, they may not know as much as some of you guys but they know what they want and know what they like.
Simultaneously all of us manufacturers want to constantly improve and develop our models to meet collectors ever growing expectations and demands for higher quality. And that’s why you see newer, and I believe, better versions of old favourites. If they didn’t sell... nobody would make ‘em!

4. K&C need to think “outside the box”…
Again, let’s examine that statement a little more closely… In my highly biased opinion K&C has been doing that for quite some time now… Here’s a few random examples.
AMERICAN
The DUKW Amphibian
The Deuce and a Half
The M12 Self Propelled Gun
The M18 Hellcat
The M10
The Sandbagged Sherman
The Ambulance Jeep

BRITISH
The Matilda
The Vickers MkVI
The Bren Carrier
The Austin K2 Ambulance
The Bedford Truck
The Crusader Tank

GERMAN
The Desert Demag
Panzer Meyer’s Halftrack
The new 8 wheel Armoured Car
The new Schwimmwagen
The Hotchkiss SPG
The Hetzer
Rommel’s Horch
Panzers I, II, III, IV (in various guises)
Plus a whole host of German transport half tracks.
I would humbly suggest that this is one company that constantly thinks “outside the box”… If you actually just sit down, take out pen and paper and make a list of all the vehicles releases of the last 5 years you might just get a surprise!
Or next time you’re in Hong Kong come along to our head office and peruse the displays and ranks for yourself.
Oh I almost forgot what about the French 1940 tanks we’ve produced… Is that in or out of the box!

5. Different Sculptors… Different Factories
Here at K&C we try to give the same sculpting teams the same ongoing projects.
For instance the same 3 guys (inc. 1 girl) have sculpted all our Crusaders & Saracens since the beginning of this series up until the present.
Another team has produced all of our WW1 “1914” series and will continue to specialize in that area.
With World War Two, being such a huge, multi theatre operation everyone works on that. However even here we try to “specialize” where possible. Most Waffen SS figures are sculpted by just one man. In addition our vehicle team (2 brothers actually) work exclusively on all of our vehicles and do no figures at all!
Factory differences… obviously we do our best to minimize any differences between painting styles and try to make all figures conform to a general K&C standard.
For the most part I think we succeed but in any hand-painted product there is bound to be some exceptions… nobody’s perfect.
Obviously you can see, I hope, big improvements in painting style. For instance newer sets like the recent “Big Red One” GI’s are considerably more realistic than some GI’s released just a couple of years before.
We continue to strive to be better all the time. On this you have my solemn promise!

Best wishes and happy collecting!
Andy C.

My Two Big Requests, Mr. Andy:

Napoleonic Polish Lancers

More North Afrika WWII Italians!

thanks for answering Andy.

personally, i wont mind repeats as long they are improved versions of the previous ones.

for example, the new King Tiger is definitely miles better than the WS067 King Tiger. and i would love to see this type of remakes on the normandy panther and the winter/wittmann's tiger.

and the sculpting has definitely improved, more lean and soldaten.

thanks again.

I guess I must have missed the "thinking outside of the box" comment. Although it was probably directed at World War II, K & C has tried several different things such as Vietnam (albeit retired) and Ancient Egypt not in the WW II area and in WW II the winter Schwim is a neat idea.

As Andy pointed out recently on another thread . . . "you can't please all of the people all of the time." That being said, comments that K&C doesn't think outside the box are a bit out of line. I think Andy and Brad (Jazzeum) have gone into the individual items and series that demonstrate Andy and the K&C team think outside the box, so I will go to the big picture: Who else in the toy soldier world, in 1995, was producing metal 1:30 scale matt WWII figures, with vehicles, aircraft and diorama materials available to complement them and set up realistic battle scenes? K&C launched the entire matt toy soldier hobby, and made 1:30 scale the standard for WWII collectors. Sounds pretty outside the box to me!:p:D;)

The Winter Schim is a neat idea but FOV already did a 1/32 scale version: http://www.forcesofvalor.com/product.aspx?pid=53

Oh my my my ....

OK - to save everyone the time to figure out where the "out of the box" comment came from - it was me. I made and it has now been taken completely out of the context which I had given.

When I made the remark it was looking forward to future releases (I believe I said that) and was not a commentary on past releases. I also believe it was said in a positive fashion as well.

To imply that ME of all people would be Anti-King & County - well thats a very big laugh !

Let me start my apologizing to Andy if I offended him or the folks at King & Country. My remarks was not being made to be demeaning - if you took it that way please forgive me. Still pals ? ;)

Now to go back and get to the TRUE MEANING (not Louis' version) of what I was driving at - King & Country has produced many, many great WWII Armor products - sometimes remaking them once or twice over. I have no problem with that and I do like more detail and up-to-date versions.

Also - K&C has been the world Leader in the Toy Soldier Industry ( I believe I have heard this said before ? ;) ) and by being that Great Company it has produced wonderful - incredible - fantastic - WWII Armor Items that are not main stream. I love them all.

However, due to the such large production level items - (again all great IMHO) - the bread & butter stuff has been done enough...its time to come at this market with a WOW factor. I simply think a 4th Sherman is not the cutting edge anymore. Andy - who I believe has done this before - needs to look "outside the current box" in WWII Armor/Vehicles.

What is that ? - I am not sure - it was an innocent remark to state my opinion which I don't think is that out of line.

Andy - knows this market and he knows what sells. I love his art and look forward to each release. But, we can always improve the product line - can't we ? That should not be blasphemy

Everyone should know that I am far from a (RC - a term I promised Shannon I wouldn't use anymore :D ) nitpicker on K&C products. To make the implication from others on the forum that I have over stepped the line is a bit much.

You can disagree with Andy and not be a REBEL - and to be honest ... I WASN'T DISAGREEING !! It was an observation in my opinion turned into a Capitol Offense - Geeee

So to recap:

1) "out of box" - a future forward opinion on WWII Armor/Vehicles - not intended to be a commentary on the past.

2) Apology made if it offended Andy.

3) Louis' needs to use PM's more and relax when someone might have a different opinion than his & stop taking posts out of context.

4) I can't believe anyone would think that I am anti-K&C !

5) I can't believe I took all this time to explain a simple remark !

Oh relax Ron, I didn't even know you made the comment. I don't get to read every post on every thread, I saw Andy's remarks, and thought one of the usual K&C bashers was claiming that K&C did nothing original - I had seen a whole thread to that effect called "collecting is getting boring" and was reacting to that, as apparently, was both Andy and Brad.

Actually there is not much in that boring thread that I would consider anti-K&C. It should be possible to express a concern about any product line without having it evoke the notion of a jihad. It strikes me sensitivities here can run a bit too high at times.

Guys, guys...Don't forget that Andy does his utmost best!
When you look at all the releases in general I can say, and I think I speak for everybody, that we are most of the time satified with his work.

He surprises us everytime with something new we don't expect.
Just look at the new releases; For instance: Market Garden. Who would ever expect Polish Paratropers!!!! Me as a Dutchman, the Polish fought for our freedom, appreciate this and have the utmost respect for these paratropers.

Thanks Andy for the Polish Paratropers and I look forward to the second wave.

Regards

Harrie

"I can't believe I took all this time to explain a simple remark !"

Neither can the rest of us.

"Thanks George - I always can count on you "

No problem Ron; you didn't need to rewrite the Gettysburg Address, we all know where you stand regaring K & C.

Speaking for myself(and i know this sounds like Santa Claus saying he loves Xmas;))i feel i can't lose whatever K&C release.I now have three Shermans three Tigers and two Panthers, and soon to be two King Tigers.I am definitley going to get the latest Sherman(i love the finish on it)and if Andy sometime down the road makes a winter KT i'm there!.And on the other hand i can't lose with the rarer stuff. The Grille,Jeep Ambulance,Dingo Scout car,M10 and chaffee etc etc.

I am happy for K&C to keep making the classics as i like them and at the same time wouldn't want to begrudge the new guys getting these must have tanks.Maybe once i've got about six of each in all different camos i'll stop....but as my wife says 'i'll believe it when i see it';)

I guess i'm one of the few collectors that are really enjoying this Golden age of our hobby with very few complaints(apart from having to sell body parts/family members to fund my hobby, who needs two lungs anyway-its not like i go rock climbing or anything?!;):D)

The new KT was a classic example.I took a sharp intake of breath when i saw the price and doubted i'd buy it.....for about four and three quarter seconds, after that it was a no brainer and i knew i had to have it:D.

What a ray of sunshine you are Rob, never ever once have heard you complain about anything at anytime.

Refreshing attitude to say the least, a man who loves his hobby, go figure.

I'm happy for you that you enjoy this so much, I hope to meet you at the London show one of these days.

Ron
Last time I looked, and maybe Pete can clarify this but the act of blasphemy referred to using the name of the dity as a swear word. Not criticisnig or whatever a toy soldier company. Unless perhaps you think Andy is....no cannot be
