Napoleonics - Question from New Collector (1 Viewer)

Hi There,

I have just started collecting K&C Napoleonics in the past few months.

Really like the Scotts Greys and French Cuirassiers.

I want to build a display of Black Watch and ColdStream Guard squares being attacked by French Cuirassiers but feel the K&C poses are limited if you want a larger square - any suggestions?

A lot of the collectors like First Legion. In addition, Collector's Showcase is releasing a new Napoleonic line that looks real nice and should be up your alley. -- lancer

I am one of those "guys" who like First Legion; so much so that it is what started me collecting this period. If you are looking for variety and quality poses and sculpting/painting to fill your square I would suggest you seriously consider these First Legion Guards:

As you will discover, they will be doing some first rate French cavalry was well. The Guards are scheduled for January and the cavalry for early 09 but well worth the wait IMHO.

Njja - You crack me up.

Actually - I have quite a few Napoleonic figures from King & Country and find them very colorful for Formation Squares - I have this Black Watch Square in my office.

King & Country have great Napoleonic figures and the detail work is quite good. Not taking anything away from First Legion, CS and Others - I actually do collect from them all. I find that King & Country is a really good all round figure. IMHO.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I might be combining; not factually accurate but will look good.

When I look at the K&C square it looks good but is very uniform where as the First Legion's bristles with bayonets and looks far more impregnable.

I think K&C needs to vary the kneeling to repel and add some bayonets to those standing firing.

As I said I love the Cruissars and they are very well done.

Another question if I may – other than eBay and here, what other sources do you use get figures, especially the French Dragoons & 71st Highlanders. I have managed to get 7 different Dragoons in the past 2 weeks.

I like the 1st Legion british gaurds square very much I have realised that simply owning large numbers of K& C Napoleonics does not make for a nice display as variety is lacking it is refresing that a new manufacturer has identified K&C's shortcomings in this area and will do very well variety of poses is what is needed and 1 st legion are off to a promising start

I will be buying the gaurds as soon as they are available Please Andy give us more to choose from especially with infantry.

or is it in the masterplan to absorb 1st Legion under the K& C umbrella ??

Dont get me wrong I am a huge King and Country fan but nthe line up is a little boring and repetitive MORE GAURDS PLEASE..

I can guarantee you that there is nothing dull or grey about them, except for the grey that is supposed to be grey. I have them intermixed with some K&C and WB and everyone who looks at the combination always asks "who makes those". If you like well researched and executed sculpting and painting, realistic proportions and interesting and varied poses than I humbley submit that you can't help but like these, no matter what size your collection.

I agree, even though I don't have any First Legion Napoleonics (i.e. I have Figurine Emporium Napoleonics which are very similar to these), they are very dynamic and the painting style is more Connoisseur-like. It is my preference not to mix them with my K&C Napoleonics because they don't really fit in too well and that goes mostly for the infantry not so much the mounted figures but, to each his own. Also, I don't mix my Britains Napoleonics with either. What I do, is set-up a different diorama which each grouping. For Britains, it's an Hougoumont diorama, K&C is Waterloo British squares attacked by French cavalry and Figurine Emporium is Quatre Bras. I may mix some First Legion in with these but, I'm not sure of the size difference. Figurine Emporium seems to be 60mm and First Legion is 54mmm.

I am not sure how you are getting that measurement for First Legion? I have measured mine several times, and the French foot soldiers are 59-60mm sole to tip of head (excluding headwear). In fact they measure 56mm from sole to eye, a measurement some seem to use for sizing for what ever reason. The first release Barvarians were slightly smaller at 58mm sole to tip of head. They are a wee bit taller than WB and about the same as K&C. The K&C foot figures do appear slightly chunky by comparison but I still find them quite compatible to mix. There are several comparative photos in the FL forum that confirm the size consistency.

This is from the front page of the First Legion web site, if this helps:

First Legion's 54mm Napoleon's Europe toy soldiers are 54mm or 1/32nd scale figures. From the sole of the foot atop the figure base to the eyes is about 54mm-58mm for our figures, depending on the particular sculpt (the artillery set in particular is a little taller). From the bottom of the base to the top of the Shako/Helmet, a relatively useless measurement as there is so much variance between the headdress of a particular figure, ranges from about 66 to 70mm. Conveniently enough, our figures are not completely dwarfed by the larger figures of say King and Country (though they are smaller) while not appearing as giants next to the smaller 54mm, though they are closer in size to true 54's. Hope that helps. In addition, we've put the photos below to illustrate the size differences between our figures and K&C to help collectors determine for themselves how well they will fit in together.

I have posted a thread in the First Legion forum section definitively addressing the scale issue with a photo of some figures next to a ruler. I've also addressed a few other comments in this thread...If folks want to carry on this discussion about the scale of our figures, it should probably be done in our forum section not in the K&C section.

From what I have seen of the FE figures, they are in between K&C and WB in size. As Matt has noted and the comparative pictures I have posted in the FL Forum and those on the FL website, the First Legion figures are just 1 mm or 2 shorter on average than the K&C figures so they should fit fine with FE. More on this over in the FL forum.

I totally agree with your comment. As I have pointed out before K&C needs to think outside the box.

Hi there,

I'm collecting Napoleon K&C over two Years now, besides the odd BB and WWI figurines and I like them a Lot. In my youth I collected Airfix 54mm and painted them, these where single figures and in my dreams I configurated them into a diorama. The K&C line made that diorama possible, especialy the Blach Watch and the French Line Infantry. The latter have a very good action pose together. I missed that with the Franch Guard models and there are so much historical pictures of them in their fighting form. So more Guards to protect my Napoleon. Some Dutch Guards mabey?

I hope o make a diorama with the french line regiment, but as I have broken my wrist this will take a while. utlooking forwad to X-mass.
