I just got back from 10 Days in Berlin, Germany.

Great Trip - I have never been to Berlin before - been all over Germany - but, never Berlin until now. WOW - What a great Capital City ! Saw alot history and got some neat pictures - which i will upload soon.

KMW - my German client has their office in between the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag - really great space and balcony which over looks both sites.

I was lucky to be included in several meetings with German Parliament Members and a wonderful luncheon hosted by the HEER ASSOCIATION in a old building across from the Reichstag and next to the Spree River.

Terrific trip ! :D

Ron:

Sounds like a great trip!

Looking forward to your pictures!

Did you find any goodies there?

Berlin is a great city. I went back in 2006. Having been stationed there when the wall was up('85-'87) I was surprised at how it looked. The former east has recieved a lot of funding and new construction. Disappointed more of the wall wasn't kept up as a reminder of what happens under a totalitarian regime.

Yep, absolutely fascinating place all right. Went there the summer after school, and again last year - thoroughly steeped in history.

It'd be brilliant to see some pictures if you have them; I'm assuming the Heer Association is some type of old comrades group?

Actually meant to ask you, Ron, I met Senator Patrick Leahy last week - was wondering if you knew him from your activities around Capitol Hill?

Cheers,

Molloy.

I will post some pics soon. No - I have not had much contact or work with Sen. Leahy. How did you meet him ?

Berlin was a blast - all the action is on the EAST SIDE now ! ;)

New Shops - Great Places to Eat - Nightlife is all in East Berlin. Went over to West Berlin to see the KaDeWe, Hard Rock Cafe and Kaiser's Church - not much nightlife over there like in East Berlin the "hip" place to be.

I stayed at the Radisson SAS - it has a HUGE  Aquarium in the Lobby ! - will share those pics too !

Ron

Been to Berlin twice now & the Berlin air show was very cool this year as they had a Me 262 flying

Always thought it would be interesting to do a WWII era tour of Berlin. Many of the buildings were destroyed in the bombings, but there must still be a lot to see. I gather Hitler's bunker is now located under a parking lot for an apartment complex. Kind of weird when you watch a movie like "Downfall" to think about that. I did once go into Mussolini's office in the Palazzo Venezia and look out onto the balcony where he gave many of his speeches. Very surreal.

Done a third reich tour when I went this year & there loads to see ;)

It's an amazing place all right.

Have some very fond memories of the clubs in East Berlin! Stamina is required though, most of those places seemed to only really get going around 1am - 2am, which is coming up to last orders time in clubs and pubs back here in Ireland. Can still remember getting the morning commuter S-Bahn home, finishing off the remains of a bottle of Jagermeister between us:rolleyes:.

Tried to fit in as much of the historical side as I could on both occasions, allowing for the fact that the rest of the group wasn't much pushed on museums, etc.

The Kaiser Wilhelm Church was very sombre, as well as the Reichstag and the obligatory photo stop beside the remnants of the wall. Funnily enough, one of the spots in the city I was most taken with was utterly non-historical - the gleaming new Hauptbahnhof (although I suppose that does technically count as if I recall correctly it was near enough to there, on the site of the old Anhalter station, that Martin Bormann's body was found in the 1970's).

I was interviewing Sen. Leahy for our college newspaper - he was in the University to collect an award. Extremely interesting man - it was only afterwards that I realised I do already know someone with connections to that part of the world! Here's the link to the online version:

Berlin is a fascinating place to visit. I had the good fortune to be there when the wall came down while doing a contract with Seimens. They were excellent hosts. I suspect the East side has changed much; it needed to since there was not much constructed during the East German control that would meet any western standards.

Sounds like you had a great time Ron. Haven't been to Berlin since I took the troop train into the Allied zone back in the bad old USSR days, things must really have changed. Post some pics when you get the chance.

Pictures !

:D :D :D

The picture below of the building is the old NAZI AIR COMMAND HQ - it is still in use and standing !

Bears are everywhere in Berlin - Most of the "Berlin Bears" are painted by other Countries - one close up here is the "CUBA BEAR"

The hotel we stayed in was the Radisson SAS - It had a huge Aquarium in the lobby - there pictures below of it.

Also the usual pics of the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and Sections of the Berlin Wall.

The Glass Dome is on top of the REICHSTAG and the Dome Church is the Berlin Dome - wonderful Old Church.
