is because of the Senatus Populus que Romanus SPQR write on the top of the gate...LOL...

Yes, it definitely looks like fortifications that can still be found in the old Roman areas of Europe. I'm thinking of the limes in Germany, or border forts on Hadrian's Wall, for example.
And I think the inscription "SPQR" was used long into the Imperial period, wasn't it? So the gate can pass from republican times into the Empire.
