Paint for K&C ? (1 Viewer)

I have ordered my PAINT !

It is the VALLEJO - Military Model - 72 SUITCASE SET ! :D

We shall see if this meets all my needs in the repair world. It was kinda fun researching all of this and I appreciate all the imput from the experts out there - THANKS !

May I say this, before anyone should go out and buy an expensive paint kit. It helps if you can identify colors and then know what primary colors mix, to create them. Also, what comes out of a ready mix tin ,can often dry to a slight enough ,different shade, to the original K/C color. I use cheap acrylic paints from a craft store, and have been able repaint K/C vehicles, by hand and by mixing X,Y,Z shades to get a final ,spot on result..All I am saying is that you make need to be able to improvise, in order to do unnoticible repairs, and I hope that any expensive answer to a small chip or 2, would be worth it. We all cannot be Alex, who had to be a genious with crayons, when he was a lad...:D Michael

I appreciate your thoughts - however as my Dad use to say "You Can't Learn To Swim Without Getting Wet First" :)

I believe - after all the advice and research - that this Set of VALLEJO Paints that I have bought are the best selection you can buy for a beginner like me.

We shall see ? Also, what attracted me to this set was the price - at 30% OFF - it looked like a real deal.

For those of you who have not clicked on to the site - they also have a 30 day money back policy and so far have very responsive to me with my questions.

Considering where you are at this stage of the painting game (ie, a novice so to speak), this kit will work very, very well for you. As you get better at painting and experimenting with mixing of colors, etc, you will become an expert in no time.

There is so secret formula to this, you just have to keep at it. I remember a conversation I had with a customer at a show one time and he said "Wow, that building you painted looks great, how did you get it to come out like that" and I replied "Well, once I painted about 100 of them, that one there was the finished result" ie, I had to paint quite afew before I got to the point where I am now.........

Thanks for the support. I thought that if I am going to buy paints - I would rather have a complete set that allows me to grow into it - than buy one bottle here and one bottle there ?

As for expensive, like others have said - heck - this whole hobby is expensive ! ;)

Practice, yes - I am ready for it. Lucky my only expectation is minor repair work ! :)

What you are doing here is something for other collectors to consider; my guess is probably every member here has a figure or two with a chip, ding or scratch and this protects your investment and allows you to keep your figures in tip top shape.

Also, as the Baron and others can tell you, there are many wonderful metal figure kits out there you can assemble and paint to fill in holes in your collection with a unique pose or two.

Painting figures is another whole side to this hobby; I love going to the DC, Delaware, New Jersey and other club shows to see the work some hobbists do with figures. Some of these gentlemen do jaw dropping work, well worth attending any of these shows and it is also a good idea to join your local club as the members meet once a month and share projects and ideas, it is another entire side of the hobby that is terrific.

Best of luck and feel free to ask as many questions as need be to get your guys back in A1 shape............

George, it is indeed! and to be honest probably more enjoyable than just collecting pre-painted figures.

I am kicking around a couple of Napoleonic themes at the moment, trying to get more British figures done for one and some terrain for the other, so we'll see............

Ron, touching up requires more than just the correct paint color. Usually a touch up requires 'filling' also, with plaster.

Let's say you have a chip in a tank, in a really visible spot. You need to apply putty (Testors for example), let dry, sand with fine hobby sand paper to make smooth, put a thin coat of Primer on it, let dry, THEN worry about the color! :D

If you just paint over the chip, your piece will lose value.

So I need to find TESTORS Putty, Hobby Sand Paper and what Primer should I use ? :confused:
 
Any hobby shop that sells paints & plastic models has putty. Testors & another brand which I can't recall are usual staples. They will have the sand paper too (Testors again). It comes in a small blister pack.

For primer, what you are after is a small bottle so you can just brush on a small amount. They come in grey and white colors.

Primer will depend on what the store has in stock-there are so many. Oil or water based is OK. I like oil for primer best because it is so smooth & robust. You will also need some thinner to clean your brush if you go oil, & let dry for a week before you put Vallejo colors on top of it.

I would suggest you polish your technique on practice materials before you do any K&C stuff
 
On small chips one need only to fill the spot with paint using a toothpick or small brush. Use a mask for any spray primer you might use on vehicles. There are lots of puttys to use for the repairs such as miliput or squadron.

The Paints arrived today - well packed and sent by UPS !

I love the colors - plan on playing with them today.

Vallejo are the best ..when there's a little chip (many times opening the box i found one on the nose of the figure ..a critical point) i use an old pen to apply the colour.
