I didn't realise just how large this tank is. Here is a comparison between a MKIV and a Challenger II.

The timber, I believe, is an unditching beam. Carried by many tanks in many wars in rough and soft terrain. -- lancer

The timber is an unditching aid. You use this with some chains attached to the Tread to self recover from mud or a trench. We used a similar timber to do it with an M1 in the mud at FT Knox.

Sometimes the best technology is really a big stick!:D
