Ever since I first watched The Man Who Would Be King, in the 70's, I have been fascinated by the Northwest Frontier. Now, I have read everything about the Afghan Wars, watched every movie or documentary I could find, and was wondering why aren't there matte metal figures for this period?

Except for some glossy ranges, all I know is in plastic: some AIP sets, that I got here by the way, and a couple of Conte playsets that had very limited distribution. I don't think this is enough...

Anyone has any idea why there isn't a matte metal range for the Norwest Frontier? Sure it deserved one!
:D

Uthred,

I am another Northwest Frontier fan. In fact, I watched "The Far Pavilions", based on the book by M.M. Kaye, for the umpteenth time last night.

K&C discussed doing matt Afghans versus Highlanders as a 25th Anniversary Set (as the first sets it did back in the mid-1980's were Northwest Frontier Seaforths & his first "badguys" were Afghans). However, Andy seemed to havebackburnered this idea when last we spoke at the Symposium in March.

That's some bad news, Louis. Could it be the manufacturers fear the Taliban's response to such a range?

I don't think that has anything to do with it . . . I just think Andy is focusing on what he percieves as more commercially successful ranges, or ranges that appeal to him more personally, at the momment (or he is trying to distract us from the project, and plans it as a surprise).

It was a joke, Louis...

Louis, I didn't know that the Far Pavilions had been made into a movie. How would you rate it?

The British firm of Barracks made a quite extensive range of North West Frontier metal figures including Afghans and Pathans in various action poses. The British figures included Maxim teams and mountain guns. They also had a large selection of Zulu War figures. Unfortunately they were sold on a couple of years ago and have since slipped off the radar. I don't know where the masters and moulds are now, but it might be worth keeping an eye out for any that might turn up on Ebay or at swopmeets.

It is one of the best minieries ever made. The cast is fantastic, the scenery and costumes are excellent, and it tries to stay pretty close to the book.

Barracks are exceptional soldiers, IMHO. I purchased a couple of sets from 4mil models before they shut down. If they are ever to surface again I think they would be popular.

Do you have any pictures, please? I am curious now...

I agree with you that it is a fascinating (and overlooked) subject. Perhaps a member from the UK knows?
