Is market garden done? (1 Viewer)

In the film a bridge too far ,frost used a hunting horn not a bugle and I am sure frost did not use a hunting horn to rally his troops in real life, just a piece of hollywood drama to make frost and the british officer in general look silly,a theme that ran throughout the film, with the American officers being advised to always say Please,to get co operation from the british.

Yes mate, not sure why i left them till last though :) Does anyone have a full set of AN?

Great Thread by the way, I love the Arnhem Series. You are lucky when you

can complete an entire series! Normally there are so many releases it is

difficult. I have one complete series Vietnam, and I am closing in on the

Original Arnhem Series including one of Andy's Diorama's done by him for the

Chicago show and the release of the series.

They are appearing less and less often on Ebay, and usually go between

$300 to $500 per set depending on set, and certificate. Keep your eyes

peeled as adding a set or two to you current series is great fun!

Also remember before long many of todays releases will be long retired, so

you might want to pick up a spare or two to trade in the future.

Here are a couple of shots of the Arnhem SS Headquarters.

I'm not sure it's only hollywood fiction, i have the book, and there was nothing more strange than the officer w. the umbrella ,and he was real, but i must check the book by Cornelius Ryan..i'll let you know!By the way you're right , it was a hunting horn, being italian i forgot for a while the term to define it and i wrote bugle!:)

You are a lucky man njja, that looks superb. Thought the first ones would be expensive now :(

I checked the book and indeed Frost carried a golden hunting horn , in the landings he rallied his battallion with it.It's on page 212 (italian version of the book by the way so i'm not sure if the page matches with the english version) and the witness is Lieutenant Robin Vlasto.Another carachter deserving to be reproduced is the Para carrying a chicken..another real life person.

And seein' the movie for the first time i did'n think the british were silly..on the contrary i always liked their sportmanship in war..there are many funny moments in the book and in the film..it's a book i'd like to re-read..

Yes the film is a classic for sure, i watched it again once i started buying the boys :) an excellent cast of actors.

The set i really liked from the first series is the officers around the map chart, love the set and would like to see it remade.

frost using a hunting horn on the DZ,only appears in ryans book ,but is never mentioned by frost himself in his memoirs,A drop too many.In ryans book he uses a private Sims as a back up to frost using his hunting horn, but Sims in his own account of the battle Arnhem Spearhead, makes no mention of the hunting horn.Perhaps the horn is just another Arnhem fairytale, the only mention of a horn or bugle, actually comes from frost in his memoirs, when he briefly heard the charge sound of a bugle during the fighting in the town near the bridge.Who is right or wrong is a matter of opinion, but a frost figure with a horn in hand would still make a great piece, however debatable on accuracy.

I remember having seen a paratrooper blowing a bugle (this time i'm pretty sure) in a bbc documentary on the D-Day so even a Para with a bugle (like the german one) could be an interesting piece..yes in some respect , i know Ryan romance a little the story, but now i'm focused on the Para Chicken ..wonderful piece could be!

Check out Andy's thread 'answers and replies' guys!:)

thanks for your contribution andy regarding frosts hunting horn, but i would think if frost used the hunting horn he would have mentioned the fact in his memoirs unless he gave little importance to this trivial moment on the DZ,he doesnt even mention the use of the horn in training.I suspect it was Ryan attempting to show a degree of pomposity in the behaviour of certain british officers during the battle.I will continue to believe John Frost than Cornelius Ryan.On the point that frost was a military advisor on the film that doesnt make the scene any more real as the film was based on the book which does mention the horn.I guess only Frosty will know if he used the horn at Arnhem,it would certainly make a great K&C figure ,hopefully we will see it one day.

Is it not possible that Ryan's account is based on interviews with a witness of the event and that Frost, attaching no importance to the event, just never mentioned it? At any rate, if it didn't happen, it should have. A great scene. -- lancer

Unfortunately i haven't read the Frost memories , so i don't know much of the colonel's personality , by the way , i agree with Lancer, maybe Frost didn't want to mention the fact because the hunting horn implies a sort of disregard to his own men, relating them to a pack of dogs...but i'm speculating and like a great director said "When the legend becomes fact..print the legend!".

By the way welcome Forlornhoper! It's good to have historical discussions with you!And you are from Newcastle , for a Caine fan like me a place to visit in the future i hope!

Cantinetozzo,if you ever visit newcastle let me know and you can stay with us,you would be most welcome ,and we can arrange for you to see the famous high rise carpark in gateshead, from Get Carter and we can visit mike and tony neville at king and country in spennymoor.Best hurry tho,i think the car park is being scheduled for demolition.Back to the horn ,i have read that Frosts batman Wicks, confirms Frost had used the horn on other operations but does not confirm its use at arnhem, great to discuss this with you and many thanks for the welcome.
