New Warbirds -- Gladiator & Buffalo (1 Viewer)

Very nice looking plane, Brad. Your purchase sure surprised me - I had no idea you would go for a big ticket item like that. Now I have to wonder what other goodies are back there. :)

Terry,

I really like the planes: I have two of the old K & C style planes and now eight of the new ones: Me 109, Hawker Typhoon, Whirlwind, Swordfish, Polish Spitfire, Hurricane, P 40 Kittyhaw and the Gladiator. I also have two Motion Model ones. Those are the big ticket items I have. I probably haven't spent more than $300 for any other item.

Wish I had more space for airplanes in 1/30 scale. :( That Gladiator is an interesting plane, kind of a hybrid between the planes of WWI and WWII. Neat piece and very appropriate desert markings as it saw service in the more secondary theatres of operation in the British empire during WWII. Looking forward to 2010 releases of maybe a BOB Spitfire, BOB Me-109, and a desert Kittyhawk! ;)

Brad and Terry,

It took sometime to find this thread and post, but there is a picture of your warbirds on Page 5, Post #49.

There are a lot of other very nice retired K&C sets including the Admiral Nelson series and Teddy Roosevelt mounted.

Enjoy.

Good stuff Glossman. I don't think I ever saw that thread. There are some rare pieces in that collection. With a few pieces from so many areas of collecting, it really brings home how vast a hobby it can be.

It's quite an eclectic collection you have, and now I can see why your latest warbird should be no surprise.

The Gloster Gladiator has an interesting history.
It served on active service with the following Air Forces:
Lithuania,Norway,Sweden.China(defence of Suichow in 1938),Finland Greece,Ireland, Egypt and the Iraqi Air Force(1940-1942).
RAF postings included.
RAF squadrons during 1940-1941 ,NOS33,34, 80 and 112.The three Gladiators best known were the three planes on MALTA:FAITH.HOPE AND CHARITY.
There performance was unfortunately more myth than reality.
The Gladiator's shining moment came from a squadron in Aden when in May of 1941 the RAF base in Habbaniyah was attacked .The Gladiators were able to destroy a Bf110 and a He111,
The Brewster Buffalo never made it to RAF squadrons in the Middle East.Six planes managed to make it to Crete but they never left the ground and were captured by the Germans.
As we know their main service was in the Far East and with Finland. The Finns used them to great advantage and as one author put it:In finland it
(Brewster Buffalo) redeemed itself completely, proved perhaps that the quality of an aircraft is of no more importance than the experience and training of its pilots-"a fact too rarely considered by those recording the history of WW11,despite the weight of evidence showing it to be so."

Thanks Terry. Yes, it's an eclectic collection and I blame Louis :D In 2006, I was strictly a WW II guy. I offered to help him unpack his collection for the first symposium in his new house and put out some of the non WW II stuff. I particularly remember Nelson's Navy. After the Symposium, I was over I saw Nelson on ebay from somebody in Spain and won that auction, then bought a couple of figures that Treefrog still had. I rembember Pete saying, "Getting into Naval figures?" Well, once I went down that road, I started to expand my collection to non-WW II figures and there you have it :) I remember Shannon remarking "your big mistake was handling those figures.":)

You're not the last person Louis has seduced into buying "pieces of interest":D

Brad,

This is an interesting snippet on how you got started on to the K&C "Nelson 6".

You have these figures prominently displayed in the front rank of one of your glass cabinets.

I shall blame you if I pick up all 6 eventually.:D:D

Raymond.

Dear Raymond:
You didn't note when you were going to buy one of these $795 items. Remember it is only money, ha, ha! "Iron Brigade" - Gary

Gary,

Most collectors cannot purchase all that they want in one go.

For myself, I set priorities and take one step at a time.
