Most sources state that about the time of DDay and the Normandy campaign the scarcity of Sherman "Firefly" conversions limited the basis of issue to 1 per troop (US = platoon). As the war drew on the numbers of Fireflies in some units rose. At first the scarcity was based on the number of conversions that could be done by the available shops. Later there was a problem getting enough of the right models of Sherman (all Fireflies were Sherman I, Sherman I Hybrid or Sherman V) as the US reduced the numbers of 75mm Shermans sent to Europe. I remember seeing a photo from near the end of the war that showed every other Sherman being a 17-pounder tank.
