I'm sure most everyone here is already aware of this problem...not really sure if "problem" is the right word? As a new collector I started collecting in a simotaneous way D-Day, Waffen, LAH, Afrika Korps...though out of the blue I decide to buy some BBA...and just like that I'm in love with a whole new series...where does this end???

In bankruptcy, divorce, and the looney bin.:p

Markey, truth is,it doesn't;).You are now officially hooked, but don't worry, there's loads of us afloat in the same lifeboat in the sea of too much choice and buffeted by the choppy waters of 'How do I afford it all'?;)

From posts and your ebay bids, you seem a little undisciplined in what you're interested in, e.g., glossy and SOHK. I think you need to try to harness that and let your interests develop and not go crazy chasing after retired items.

Slow down and decide which ranges you really like and use those as your core collection. Make a list of pieces in those ranges and decide which ones you want to put together to make a collection. There are many sets that are done over more than once at very different sculpt qualities and e-bay prices. Decide which sets you do not want to buy and mark them on your list.
There may be some older expensive items you may decide are not worth the cost - mark them as not buy on the list. There may be an older expensive piece you must have - the occasional splurge is ok.

Finally, there may be the occasional piece from a completely different range that you just love - so get it. I'm not collecting the naval themes, but the mini-sub is so nice. And while I am not collecting Naps, the tent set with Bonaparte and his generals is a classic as are the Robert E Lee tent and equipment set and some of the artillery sets.

That's my strategy to collect and keep sane - but it does require firm choices.

Terry,

I like this one:

"There may be an older expensive piece you must have - the occasional splurge is ok."

The other thing is not to set yourself too many rules. You've listed a few ranges here from WW2,this means there will usually be something coming out or just released that you will like.Although you want some discipline remember its a hobby and its what makes YOU happy,if you are over strict with yourself it can take the enjoyment out of it.

And if you go bankrupt, (or crazy) that can take the enjoyment out of it too.:D

Don't open your baggage on here Terry!:D;)

Seriously though,if you set too many rules it will kill the joy of it,buy what catches your eye, that will you know your collection is made up of items you really wanted. It has always worked for me and for that reason I never sell anything:cool::cool:

I think a good approach, depending on your budget of course (since some can afford broader and deeper collections than others) is to concentrate on 2-3 ranges - I do Civil War, Bulge, and D-Day mostly, but also buy small groups of other ranges you like. For example, I love the planes, but I didn't buy the Rommel plane (was tempted though) or Hitler's last fighter; I did buy the Hurricane and Mustang and a couple of sets of figures to go with each. I also have 3 AK vehicles but limited it to that. In addition, I bought the Soviet T-34, a couple of buildings, and 3 sets of figures from that series. It is not an easy line to draw. I have been incredibly tempted by Napoleonics (have 4), American Revolution (have 6), and Egyptian (never pulled the trigger after many Ebay bids), and the Alamo (still none).

Everyone's line is different, but I think buying a lot of some series and a little of others can keep you satisfied and not break the bank. It makes it even harder to draw the line if you look at all the great offerings coming from so many different companies now - K&C, First Legion, Collectors Showcase, and Figarti alone have a slew of awesome WWII stuff, and the new Britains Civil War lines are amazing. Another good approach is to spend a few days thinking about a purchase; if you still want it badly after all that thinking, then it is a good buy. I often decide I will wait or really don't want an item badly enough to spend the money.

That's true. But the rules work for me and if I didn't have them, I probably would not still be collecting out of frustration - there is just too much choice and opportunity to acquire.

No argument there,so much choice, and thats just from K&C.

Louis...you been doing this for awhile...I'm about certain you haven't filed bankruptcy...not been divorced...and don't appear all that looney;) Where does this knowledge come from?

I haven't made it there yet, but I can feel it coming one of these days . . .:D:p

Brad, retired items are my favorite and strictly limited as well...about 1/3-1/2 the stuff I buy is resold...I function the same way I buy stock...I buy the stock...I see a double...I sell half...and end up with half for free...so eveything I buy I don't always plan on keeping! I'm sure we all function differently...as a new collector I'm sure I have alot to learn. A recent example of building a collection at a discount...I bought 4 sets of german lamp posts from K&C U.K for about $240 US and bought them puposefully knowing that people were paying/buying them on Ebay for Big $$$...I sold one set for the amount paid for all four sets...I end up with 3 sets for free...I personally enjoy this part of it as well. I would like to add that if I ever "ask" for something here on this forum I "will not resell it". I'm asking for my personal collection. On the otherhand, if somebody posts something for sale here and I buy it...I then may re-sell the item on Ebay...I have found there are people here on the forum who don't sell on Ebay or even have abilities to take pictures...I have a camera...I have an Ebay account...and I know the item is less than what I can sell it on Ebay for...sorry but thats the business side of me building my collection on discount! So everything you see taking place on Ebay is not actually stuff I'm collecting...Another great discovery which I believe I told you already is that I found a way to get more than 50% off my new purchases from KingsX...if you buy $480 worth of items you get a free John Wayne...I sell John Wayne on Ebay for $250-$275. Call me crazy, undisciplined and someone who needs harnessing...I'm having alot of fun either way!

The making of a collection can take many years perhaps you should have a long term strategy, with short term goals in between.I personally only collect K&C for numerous reasons,i have an interest in many ranges therefore i set myself short term goals based on my long term strategy by that i mean i buy figures that make up an immediate " Snapshot Scene" that tells a story,( short term goal achieved ),then over an unspecified time i add to that "Snap shot Scene" to complete the Story /Diorama (Long term goal achieved ),this will allow you to achieve variety and depth to your collection, whilst ensuring you maintain a healthy interest in your long term strategy with inspired short term choices /purchases.Creating these "Snapshot Scenes " allows me to change the direction of my collection at anytime and return to or start up any range i decide and still maintain the long term strategy. ken

My policy - buy NAPOLEONICS ! :D :D :D

everything is getting retired anyway ........

When I started collecting 11 years ago I wanted to get as many waffen as I could (and some Arnhem British figures to set up combat scenes); however, I realized very soon that I could not keep up with everything I liked. When AK came out, I committed myself to it (and a few 8th army to set up combat scenes). Once in a while I find waffen or LAH figures that I like (especially the Third Reich personalities) that are irresistible, so I get them. I am of "divesting" in the near future since more most of my collection is in a closet and not in display. I think I will only keep the desert stuff and the LAH personalities. Of course, I said the same thing five years ago, and my collection just keeps growing.

You have stocks that double in this market! Forget about toys and manage some of my money.

Dear MarkeytMaker":
Ah, so "where does it end?" It will end when you run out of display space or out of money, ha, ha.
