Rob,

You just haven't lived until you've tried one. Just make sure you're no more than 5 minutes from a casualty department prior to consuming one. :D

What are you guys talking about??

Take one candy bar (chocolate, nougart and caramel), carefully dunk in a vat of batter and then through in a deep fryer full of vegatable oil for 30 seconds or so. Scrape off excess lard and serve with a garnish of battered crispy bits.

Top that with yer fancy American cooking.

Ron,you take our most popular chocolate bar the 'mars bar',(you have them under a different name i think)and deep fry it in batter.!For the love of god why?.I can feel my arterys closing up just thinking about it!

Rob

Yeah but don't feel bad,so did Jack the ripper!

Although people think he was foreign now.God we can't keep anything for ourselves anymore!

In the US there is an annual tradition in some states, especially in the Midwest, called the “Fair.” People will compete at the local county level with various garden and agricultural items (both plant and live animal) to win prizes and to and compete at the “State Fair”. This annual event, held in the late summer, draws huge crowds for not just for the various garden and agricultural competitions, but also for the more important entertainment and food.

At the Minnesota State Fair it is a tradition to cook various foods and put them on a stick so that the fairgoer can enjoy their food product while on the go. If there is a food that can be put on a stick, after it has been deep fried, they have it at the State Fair. Deep fried candy bars have been a long-time tradition, along with pork chops on a stick and a variety of foods. We here in Minnesota have a long, long tradition of deep-frying anything and everything.

Michael, I guess most countries have something similar. In Australia it's called an Agricultural Show, or more commonly just a "Show". This is the place to exhibit your cow, horse, vegetables, preserves (jams etc), fruit, craftwork, pigeons, chooks, dog, etc etc. Downunder shows are usually held between April and early June. In smaller towns the show only runs for one or two days but in larger cities they may go for several with Brisbane's running about ten days.

Some keen exhibitors travel hundreds of miles to gain experience, ribbons and trophies for their horse or whatever at the consecutive shows in the different towns. Of course the people that run the entertainment such as the different rides follow the shows and are called "Showies" which are the same as your "Carnies". Naturally the locals believe theft rates rise in the communities when the "showies" are in town, but it's a tradition in most countries to blame something on the Gypsies ;)

The performing or "ring events" and the stationary displays in the pavilions where the cows, vegetables etc are exhibited may be the main point of a show. However most of the general public go to enjoy the different rides and show foods although the later does have a reputation of being less than edible on occassion. Traditional favourites are "Dagwood Dogs" aka "Pluto Pups" which are a hot dog impaled lengthways on a stick that is battered and fried.

Your Cotton Candy is called "Fairy Floss" downunder and being bright pink in color this makes it less attractive to guys over say 15 years old  There are many other show foods such as Candy Apples, Cream Waffles etc and more seem to arise over time. But a good Steak Sandwich or Meat Pie with a Coke is hard to beat imo, and don't forget the "Beer Tent" where you are almost guaranteed to see a fight at some stage, those Gypsies started it :)

OzDigger, your description of "shows" pretty much describes the county fair/state fair events here in the US. And I absolutely agree, it is ALL about the Beer Tent ;)
