Retiring a Scenic for Napoleon in Egypt (1 Viewer)

The retirement of this recent release makes no sense with the new Napoleon in Egypt line just getting started. Similarly retiring parts of the Desert Village last month were odd choices as well, especially those wall pieces. I had planned on getting the obelisk but just recently bought the new Naps in Egypt sets so I guess I'll have to say bye-bye to this one. It seems to me that Andy will be losing purchases by folks like myself who are retired and cannot afford to pick up everything at once nor want to pay the upscaled prices for retired items on eBay. I love the new Naps in Egypt and will thus focus on the non-combat figures and sets to build my diorama. I was so concerned about reduced production numbers and quick retirements that rather than buying the Naps over the next months I ended ordering all at once.

Hi Randy,
I also noticed the speed with which new pieces are being retired. Andy is an astute businessman, however, business is probably not what it used to be, hence the quick retirements to drum up sales and move stock. Armand Bayardi makes some great Greek/Roman columns which are very accurate, also they are easy to paint. As you probably know the Greeks/Roman were all over Egypt and Israel in antiquity.

Randy check the following link to a kit for a building. THis building could easily be painted as a Mamluk period structure. It has a lot of potential.

like you I'm quite perplexed with these desert retirements because, like you, I'm planning on emassing Napoleonics from the Egyptian Camapign, but maybe next year, when I've got all the European issues.

We can only hope that these is a 'grand plan' to make more, even better, diorama items in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments. This new K&C policy makes it hard to know what to buy first or next. John for your sake I hope those 1st Naps in Egypt releases are still there when you are ready to buy them. I wish they would redo the flagbearer without that eagle.

I think I'll do a modification on that figure.

Cut off the Eagle and replace with a spearhead, and also repaint the flag to one from a demi brigade that was in Egypt. The Eagle can go into my spares box for another Empire era flagbearer.

I did a repaint of a Highlander from the Crimea a while back, and that looked fine, according to the feedback, so why not give it a try???

I certainly think your thread has merit. I was on the fence about the desert village myself as I was considering it for my modern forces. Looking back though, am now very glad I decided to not jump in as it would have put me under the gun to buy, which I don't really appreciate. I typically like to sit back and see how a line unfolds and this one is certainly impressive.

I passed on the spindle only because I have enough of the earlier stuff for Egypt. I think the piece will only be available from retailers for so long as the Egypt scenics do command hefty premiums and I gotta believe the speculators may gobble these up. Just my thoughts.

Either way, I appreciate everything you've done and said for us here in the hobby. If you'd like, pm me and the next time I am in Gettysburg, I will pick one up for you and you can pay me back at retail and postage (and Pa sales tax ^&grin). That way, you're covered and can pay at a comfortable pace.

On the flipside, I gotta believe that they will issue more scenics in the future related to desert themes as a good part of their catalog covers those environments.

Today's post from Gordon/ Andy does indeed confirm more Desert buildings to come, that's another reason for retiring items, room has to be found for storage.
