Questions - Spirit of 76 Great Americans Washington,Franklin,Grant & Ted Roosevelt

Hi Guys,
I was very happy to just win this Spirit of 76 / K&C set on Ebay (US$116.49).

Had never seen or heard of it before.

Does anybody know when they were released, how many made and what they originally sold for ? Did Spirit of 76 do any other similar sets ?

Nice looking set which will go well with my other leaders.

Any info much appreciated.
Regards
Brett

Brett,

I'm thinking 2005 or 2006 but don't really know. As far as I know K & C made only this set for them. I would think Andy could answer your questions. I know that sets were broken up by sellers as I have the Stonewall Jackson, which goes nicely with the K & Civil War (second edition).

Brad,
Andy not back in HK until Monday.

No Stonewall in this set.

Was discussing idea of the set with a collector earlier and we were trying to think who you would put in a second set of 4 Great
Americans.

I note Lincoln was not included in first set which must have been a choice of Spirit of 76 who opted to do Grant instead. Might have been that plenty of Lincoln figures available.

When coming up with a second group I suppose a factor is have they been done before. Ignoring that point and not
being an expert on "great" Americans I would probably include :

Franklin Roosevelt in his wheelchair.
Thomas Jefferson
Ike
Lincoln.

Hi Brett,
do you have a picture from the set you won?
To the best of my knowledge, "Spirit of 76", a now closed Toy Soldier Shop in Columbus, Indiana, and online dealer, did only commission one 4-piece set from King & Country and that set consisted of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Jackson.
I visited "Spirit of 76" frequently, since their shop was not too far away from my place, but never heard of another release.

CORRECTION
I am sorry, Jefferson was not in the set.
The set was Washington, Franklin, Roosevelt and Jackson.

Konrad,
Thanks for that info. I looked again and you and Brad appear to be correct.

The Ebay description was as follows :

Set of 4 painted pewter figurines which were the result of a joint venture between Spirit of '76 minatures and King & Country. Series 1 of "The Great Americans", this collection contains George Washington,
Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, and Benjamin Franklin. Great historical set with presidents and revolutionary era founding fathers. New in original box, never removed. Mint, new condition

I can't post pics but if you enter Ebay Item No 110751763253 you will find the box cover and contents images and he does definitely look like a Confederate and not Union. Now I do not want to upset anybody from the South but it does appear strange that Jackson was chosen for this set. Whilst an important General in the ACW he does seem out of place with the other three figures.

I remember seeing pictures of inside of Spirit of 76 and looked like a great shop.

Hi Brett
I bought "The Spirit of 76 Great Americans" which was Franklin,Washington, Jackson (Stonewall) and Roosevelt - nice set - however the shop closed

Re: Questions - Spirit of 76 Great Americans Washington,Franklin,Grant & Ted Roosevel

The shop closed in april 2010 , i remember there were great offers and i snatched all the Highlanders (Black Watch) from the AWI K&C range for a great price..also with 8$ i bought EA002 and a few other bargains..i bought the Great Americans Serie too ..not all of them , only Franklin (great pose) Teddy Roosevelt and Washington..they seems a little smaller than the average K&C , more 1/32 than 1/30 and they haven't a label under the base..but the sculpting and the painting is K&C quality..

Spirit of 76 was a great shop that I went to visit from time to time. It was in Columbus Indiana and it closed around 05 or 06. It closed before my tour overseas is how I know. The set in question was great and I gave one to a friend for Christmas. Those folks are the best but the location for the store was not good and the owner is a musician and travels alot and they also had a new baby. The swhop was really cool and was a collectors paradise.

Frank,
Once I receive my set and display it in the shop I will see if anybody gets interested in it enough to make an offer for your set. I won't be selling mine as I enjoy collecting the leaders.

How do the figures compare in size to current K&C figures ?

Re: Questions - Spirit of 76 Great Americans Washington,Franklin,Grant & Ted Roosevel

I remember buying the set at OTSN the year they premeired it. I want to say 2004.
It was that Kentucky shop that had K&C do it just for them. They had plans for future sets also.
I remember their room had all sorts of banners, dvd playing, showing off the new set.
Can,t remember what I paid for it, I think $99.

Gary,
The seller originally listed it starting at $99 and it got no bid so he listed again starting at $89.

$99 for a 4 box special set at that time sounds about right. I was willing to go up to US$160 based on current figure prices and the fact leaders is my collecting interest.

Any idea how many made ?

Regards
Brett

Hi Brett

They are smaller about 1/32 as quoted above
