Hello:

As I recall Lee Marvin was a "real" U.S. Marine who fought on Iwo Jima in WW2 in February-March 1945. But, he did not talk much about it. I remember learning of this when seeing a segment on the Jonny Carson Show many years ago with Carson bringing up the subject of Lee Marvin's time on Iwo Jima when Lee Marvin was on the Carson show.

Nice movie ,I have it on DVD and about 250 other war movies.But I prefer the black and white movies from the forthies and the fifthies, because they use the authentic stuff in these movies.
Three of my favourites are" Dunkirk" with John Mills and " Reach for the sky" with Kenneth More and "Battleground" with Van Johnson

I overwhelmingly agree with you, especially with "Dunkirk" and "Reach for the Sky." Some of the 60-70 era movies are classics, where you have to blur your eyes a bit with the acquiescent movie props of the day (i.e., Patton tanks; meant to resemble Panzers on the move through the Kasserine Pass:rolleyes2, just think if they did a modern remake of these spaghetti-western-esque flicks using authentic reconditioned tanks, planes and vehicles, era-correct uniformed troops (e.g., Saving Private Ryan, and the like). Anyway, at the end of the day, I still love all the classics.^&grin

I think his service was on Saipan? I remember him talking about an interview with a British host, who commended him for being awarded a Purple Heart. Marvin squirmed a bit and downplayed it by saying he got it for being shot, the host got very excited and asked 'where' and Marvin was forced to say 'in the butt'.
