This collection belongs to another member of the Southern California Toy Soldier Collectors Society. He is an attorney who lives in Orange County; he has done legal work for the motion picture industry which has enabled him to commission some backdrops from Hollywood model makers. The first photos are of the masterpiece of his collection which he bought at auction in Germany (without the figures) and is probably 10 feet long.

Absolutely magnificent, Michael!^&cool^&cool Thanks for the photos,:smile2:

That Napoleonic display is simply incredible. Thanks for posting.

It is even more incredible when seen in person. I have never seen anything like it before.

The mounted figure of Napoleone is extremely rare and sought after by collectors in the know. Unfortunately, I am not one of those collectors and I have completely forgotten who made it. Baidu?

More photos of the collection.

Jeez Mike, you guys on the left coast don't mess around. Another magnificent collection. The Napoleonic display is tremendous and I was equally impressed by all the Egyptian architecture in the different displays. He's got quite a few Russian-made Ancient Greek figures on show in that one dio. Very impressive set-ups. Thanks for posting the pictures. I really enjoy getting to see these collections. -- Al

I am glad you liked the collection, Al. It has been my pleasure to share these collections with you and other Forum viewers.

While the Napoleonic display is the center piece of his collection, I also noticed the emphasis on ancient themes including the Egyptian architectural pieces which I believe were custom made for him by the Hollywood model makers I refered to earlier. Those Russian-made Greeks are very high end (and not cheap).

Goodness me, im not into pre WWII TS's but your collection and dio's are awesome Mike! Thanks for posting the pic's.

My friend Doug Luna, another West Coast collector (he lives in a suburb of San Francisco), lives in the same community as one of the Industrial Lights and Magic big wigs, and he has some custom made Hollywood dioramas in his collection, including a magnificent castle and an Egyptian temple where the model builders laser etched real hyroglyphics on the walls. I guess meeting these hollywood modelers is another benefit of living on the left coast.:smile2:

Good point, Al. We need to add a new subforum: "California Collections" ;)

Thanks, Mike, for the look at this collection, too! I had a lot of fun looking at the Napoleonic scenes and trying to identify the makers. I spotted a number of Vertunnis, including Maria Theresia (though demoted apparently to lady in waiting :) ), and some other classic makers. Do you know anything about the mounted Nappy in the first photo? The shape of the base on that figure and the surrounding mounted figures, and the style of the paint, suggest to me the Spanish maker Sanquez, though I could be wrong. He produced figures in a roughly smaller scale, and those are probably 54mm.

This is another collection that inspires me to work towards that goal of a themed collection, and the display space.

Prost!

Tom,

You are welcome. Although pre-World War II toy soldiers are not your cup of tea, I am glad that you can appreciate a whole world of collectors out there who collect traditional, glossy toy soldiers. Although realistic, gritty, World War II vignettes using 60mm, in action, matte figures are outstanding, it is hard to beat the toy-like color and pageantry of these classic toy soldiers. Alas, I would like to take credit for these marvelous collections and dioramas, but they are not mine, they belong to other collectors that I am lucky enough to be acquainted with.

Louis,

Doug Luna is also a friend of Bob Walker and, if I am not mistaken, I met him at one of Bob's open houses and or at the West Coaster. I personally don't know any of the Hollywood model makers, but there is a member of our group, Gary Fournier, who is a model maker who does work for TSSD. You may recall, I have a thread under Trophy called "Nile River Gunboat Using Trophy Figures" (I think) which has the best Nile River Gunboat I have ever seen, bar none, placed in a great looking vignette. Gary custom built that boat and the dockside scene. I only bring it up because, he will take commissions.

Jeez, as a small government, strong national defense, fiscal conservative who proudly served for eight years in the U.S. Army and the CIA's clandestine service, I hate that term, left coast.

Hi Brad,

Hey, I would vote for that new sub-forum. In July, we have another collector hosting a showing of his collection in Beverly Hills. I promise to take photos. I could kick myself, because I have arranged many of these collection showings over the years and I didn't bring my camera, so I don't have any photos to share. I also regret not accepting an invitation to see a collection a year and a half ago. The collector wanted me to preview it before hosting a showing, sadly, he passed away earlier this year before it could be scheduled.

The Napoleon figure got both Ed Ruby and Bob Walker very excited when they saw it. It might be a Baidu or something similar. They mentioned what they though it was worth, but I have forgotten what they said. In any case, it was out of my price range.

When you get your themed collection put together, don't forget to show it to us.
