I realise most collectors on here buy new metal models, but I acquired a couple of 65mm hollowcast Arabs recently, I am assuming them to be Britains, but there are no marks, anyone recognise them?

I don't think these are Britains at all. I don't recall seeing seated Britains figures.

65mm would be a little too big to be classic Britains hollowcast. If I remember correctly, they measured their 54mm from the top of a figure's uncovered head to the soles of his feet, and they set a standard.

They do remind me of certain Heyde figures, though, as well as some by makers in Vienna up to the end of the Second World War. They might be German in origin; I have a couple of resource books I can check.

Prost!

Thanks for the reply Britfarmer. I seem to have made a fool of myself, I have just noticed I put the scale as 65mm - I meant to put 54mm - OOPS! Sorry. Perhaps John Hill & Co then?

Sorry Baron, just been saying how I typed the scale wrong, (Keyboard's fault of course)

No problem, that just puts us on the right track, I have a different reference in that case, Richard O'Brien's "Collecting Foreign Made Toy Soldiers.

Scott was close, but not Johililco or Timpo--they're Crescent. You have 2 examples of Crescent's CR88 "Seated Arab". There's a black and white picture of the figure on page 201 in O'Brien.

If they were mine, I'd probably repaint them, bring them back to life, so to say.

Congratulations on your find, prosit!

Brilliant! Thanks Brad. I had to pay a whole one pound each, and I agree, they would look better repainted. I may make a plaster of Paris mould first, I quite fancy a row of ten of these. It's so important to find out exactly what we have, thanks again. I am assuming 1950s/1960s?

I scanned the page from O'Brien this morning, but it's pretty granular, let's see how this looks:

Oh, man, that looks like crap. My scanner acts up and I can get a better image, I'm sure. I'll try again tonight.

Brad, thanks for the scan, sorry I didn't notice it was there. I am still getting used to this site. What was the "12.00"? Was it the "Book" price? The scan is fine, I do appreciate it.
