I,ve been selling on ebay for years now but just found out something new. When someone from outside the USA pays you thru paypal, paypal takes an extra 1% over and above their 2.9%. Never knew this. I guess I,ll just add an extra 1% to their postage from now on.
Speaking of postage on foreign orders. Does ebay charge the seller for his listed postage at the time of it,s listing or the adjusted postage after a foreign sale?

I believe it's against eBay policy to charge a buyer for PayPal fees even though I'm sure this observed more in the breach.

They can only charge you for listed postage because they charge you for the eBay fee as soon as the auction's over.

Brad, I meant whatever I calculate the postage to a foreign country I,ll just add 1% to the postage I charge. I won,t indicate that it,s a paypal fee. I know you are not suppose to charge for paypal.
I have no international sales on my listing but they bid and win anyway so I don,t fight that. But I don,t give any price breaks to them relative to postage.

I can never understand why I see online dealers adding PayPal fees to the price of an item when you pay using PayPal. All credit card companies charge a processing fee. So why single out PayPal. In fact PayPal's fees are actually one of the lowest. A certain toy soldier manufacturer does this when you use PayPal on their site. It's kind of irritating.

Also all credit card processors charge a higher processing fee for international transactions. Most will also only allow a merchant to process no more then 10% of their total transactions as an overseas transactions. That's hard for a business like mine when almost half of my customers are outside of the US. PayPal doesn't set any limits on overseas transaction.

I think that PAYPAL should allow merchants to pass on the cost of these to their customers.

It's a common practice here in Australia for retailers to pass on credit card fees when customers pay by credit card and I see no reason for not being able to do the same with PAYPAL.

I consider it a major annoyance (as a merchant) that you can't do that to recoup your costs.

Not in Australia...many big businesses (airlines, phone companies, electricity supplies) charge extra fees to use credit cards for payment.

That's a cost of doing business. It should be figured into your markup, like advertising, supplies, etc.

I personally won't buy anything from a seller who charges extra paypal fee. I totally agree with the TSB that buyer should not be charge any extra fee.

What about paying a phone bill or booking any airfare using a credit card where the fee is passed onto the consumer?

Passing on the PAYPAL fees is the same as passing on credit card fees to me.

I don't see why a business should incur the extra fees when it's commercial reality to see such fees passed onto the consumer.

Not if they want to remain competitive. Some businesses try it here also, that is until they
go belly up. It does remain an option for monopolies [utilities] and some local government
offices [tax collector].
