My comment is withdrawn :salute::

I have spent almost 25 years (my whole adult working life) teaching people from the age of 12 (our Year 8) to University undergraduates and I still laugh when one comes up to me and asks 'is spelling important'? They never ask about sentence structure, introduction, conclusion, or quality of ideas. Spelling is almost the only thing that does not test intelligence. It is merely an examination of work ethic and they just cannot be bothered. I have proof read this twice and I hope and pray there are no errors. If there is, I am trying to be ironic.

I agree with you on one level but a poorly spelt paper or document gives a poor initial impression of the author.

I agree - but a generation of students cannot grasp that fact at all!
