Toy Soldier club in Pa?? (1 Viewer)

If you give out advanced notice, I would love to try to make one of your meetings, especially if you hold it in Gettysburg. I've never been.

We would love to have you- of course if we get you and Ron together I may not have adequate security for our two major generals.

I will certainly give adequate advance notice- in fact, I will post a range of dates well in advacne in order to be as inclusive as possible.

I am from Easton and interested. Road trips work for me. I was up to a shop in Stroudsburg today, (stockade Miniatures) and driving out to Gettysburg tomorrow for a day trip to go to the soldier stores.

Never been to Gettysburg?

We have to correct that right away. I just took a great friend of mine around the Park yesterday and we hit a couple of the Toy Solider Shops. Had a great time.

I could put something together in Washington - if any you guys want to come? We can meet somewhere or if you want to meet on a Friday or Monday - I could get a room in the US Capitol ?

That would be pretty sweet!! I have an uncle who has some pull at the Pentagon and I was considering talking to him as well.

I might have to come incognito if we go to the Captiol- the Secret Service might put my face to some of the nonsense I pulled as a kid and beat the living dogsnot out of me on the Capitol steps. Wouldn't want to embarrass you guys by screaming like a sissy as the blacksuits are putting the beat down on me :D:D:D

To Louis and anyone, who has not been to Gettysburg, you must do the upper deck of the tour bus. It is 2+ hours of an audio representation of the battle as you drive over the very ground being spoken about......Any newcomers that I bring there, that is just about the first thing we do......Michael

Michael

Is that the same audio tour as the History Channel's - Audio Tour? That is the one which come with a great book and 2 CDs.

I use that everytime someone wants to see the park - the good thing about it is you can stop the CD and get out of the car and walk around what you have just heard. Plus the sound effects of Cannons - while looking at the battlefield is something else :D

Ron

I have never done the car tour, so I do not know if it is the same script.....it has always been more fun to just sit on the upper bus deck, put the headphones on, and tour away. Also the bus has access to some parts of the field that cars can not go....Michael

I have done both the audio tour and paid for one of the personal guides who ride in your car with you. Try the latter first and then the audio tour on a subsequent visit.

We can call ourselves "Sons of the Desert" like the Laurel and Hardy movie. Remember that one where they lie to their wives and tell them Oliver needs to go on a cruise with Stan for his health as a cover story to attend a lodge convention in Chicago? The ship they are supposed to be on sinks and their wives think they are dead. Very funny. Has nothing to do with toy soldiers but... Gettysburg would be a great locale because of all the shops, history, and fact that I work there so it would be a short drive.

Guys,

I would be thrilled to tour Gettysburg with you. Ron, you and Chris figure out when you want to gety together and do this, and I will arrange to get there. Plus, doing something at a room in the Capital sounds amazing.

Ok- here is what I envision:

First meeting- either August or October- I am thinking September is out due to the Chicago Show interest. I would prefer October as August can get pretty nasty heat wise. I am willing to work with everyone on this though. I would prefer October as well as that will give me sometime to save up some money to buy some stuff.

I would like to tie this all in with toy soldier collecting though. I had volunteered the idea so perhaps we meet at my place, look at my puny collection, laugh at it and then head out to the Battlefields. I would like to see this sort of showcase an individuals collection, we meet up somewhere and they can discuss their pieces, discuss ideas, whatever. I also think we can swing getting a dealer to perhaps stop over/ let us use/ visit their shops.

Just my thoughts but I would like to see this sort of tie in with the hobby.

Here are some more potential ideas:

2008: March/ April- Follow Ron's suggestion and go to the Capitol- view some of his collection.

July- Go visit the Valley Forge area and meet one of our Eastern collectors.

October- Field trip to Louis's in NYC to view his collection??

Anyway, those are some ideas based on posts here on the Forum. I think GBurg is a no brainer for the first gathering/ formation. You guys let me know which month works best, I will compile the results and then we can discuss the exact date and meeting location.

So, gentlemen, at this time, please come forth with your picks for the month- August/ September/ or October.

Sounds like a plan ! :D

October would be better for me too. With the wedding coming up next month and all - October give me time to get ready for a toy soldier shopping spree too. ;)

Since, I wont be going to Chicago in Sept. - that month can work for me too - but, October would be my first call.

Ron

October would be fine for me. I only live a hour away from Gettysburg, east of Chris........We do have some nice Bed and Breakfasts in Marietta in victorian settings. Those ,that might be coming a weekend or overnight, if interested, let me know and I will have info sent to you..........Michael

I think we need to save Louis' house until after we have had a chance to a least have one get together and meet. How about Gettysburg - the first weekend in October ?

We can meet for lunch somewhere and then go over to a Toy Soldier Shop ?? :D

Update-

Ok- I have received PMs and the like from various individuals and I myself have worked on getting some information together.

Here is a very tentative agenda:

Date: October 6, 2007

10A- Noonish- Meet at CC's house, peruse his collection then head to Battlefields.

Noonish- 3ish- Tour the Battlefields- I need some input here Michael and I think you would be the man with that information- roughly how long do you think it would take to tour the battlefields? Is 3 hours adequate?

3ish- 5 or so- take the Gettysburg Toy Soldier shop tour- I have contacted John Zabawa of Gettysburg Toy Soldiers about us swinging by and meeting there- he said he would be happy to accomodate our group and to discuss toy soldier trends and stuff like that. I have heard there are three shops down there- one is Johns, one I am assuming is that History store and I am not aware of the third. If anyone has any information, we can share it.

5ish- 7, 8, etc- Dinner in Gettysburg for those who are interested.

I think John's shop is a good one to hit as one of the tour companies is located right next to his shop. His shop is very small though so depending on how many guys we get to show up, it could be a cramped go of it.

I am assuming this is going to be a wife/kid friendly event?? If I were to run off and tour the battlefields without taking my lot, my wife, "Tomahawk Jill" :D:D might take issue with that.
