Toy Soldier club in Pa?? (1 Viewer)

Update-

Ok- I have received PMs and the like from various individuals and I myself have worked on getting some information together.

Here is a very tentative agenda:

Date: October 6, 2007

10A- Noonish- Meet at CC's house, peruse his collection then head to Battlefields.

Noonish- 3ish- Tour the Battlefields- I need some input here Michael and I think you would be the man with that information- roughly how long do you think it would take to tour the battlefields? Is 3 hours adequate?

3ish- 5 or so- take the Gettysburg Toy Soldier shop tour- I have contacted John Zabawa of Gettysburg Toy Soldiers about us swinging by and meeting there- he said he would be happy to accomodate our group and to discuss toy soldier trends and stuff like that. I have heard there are three shops down there- one is Johns, one I am assuming is that History store and I am not aware of the third. If anyone has any information, we can share it.

5ish- 7, 8, etc- Dinner in Gettysburg for those who are interested.

I think John's shop is a good one to hit as one of the tour companies is located right next to his shop. His shop is very small though so depending on how many guys we get to show up, it could be a cramped go of it.

I am assuming this is going to be a wife/kid friendly event?? If I were to run off and tour the battlefields without taking my lot, my wife, "Tomahawk Jill" :D:D might take issue with that.

Chris-
Tarbox Toy Soldier shop is the third - although it is fairly small like John's shop. The biggy is the Antique Center near the square. Dobbin House is nice for dinner, but you probably need a reservation for a large group. I'm about 15-20 minutes away from you near Carlisle if you want to swing a stop in before heading to the battlefield or not. I'll probably pass on the battlefield tour since I work in GB everyday and sat. in october = college football.

Thanks!! I forgot all about that- haven't checked PSU's sked- hopefully that isn't Michigan or OSU weekend!!

Update- August 4th

Hello guy:

I did an advanced recon of the Gettysburg area last night and gathered the following intel- :D

The battlefield tours will run through Thanksgiving. I was a little concerned with the October date but it looks like we will be squared away. They have two buses that you can go on and with different types of presentation- a taped recording that you can listen to or with a live speaker. Group packages/ rates are available as well. Please follow this link to get an idea of what is available:

http://www.gettysburgbattlefieldtours.com/Package.html

To just do the battlefield is @$21- $25 per person. Kids and seniors are a bit cheaper.

I spoke with John Zabawa of GBurg toy soldiers and he will keep the shop open for us if we are running late. He has a great selection of KC and Britains figures as well as a good selection of Frontline Naps, some St. Pete and East of India. He also has tons of plastics and a good selection of FOV stuff.

Alright fellas, that's the legwork I can do here. The rest is up to you guys- I would like to hear from you if you are interested before Sept 15th. I am not going to scramble to try to do this a week or so before Oct. 6th. If this is just something that no one is interested in, that is fine, at least we gave it a shot.

STANDS ALONE!!

John is a great guy - but, like ou said his store is a little small. Why arent we talking with the folks over at Gettysburg Antique Center in the Town Center?

Ron

Dear Chris, my wife and I will be there......if everyone can afford it, the bus trip is the best for touring. I will try to get actual bus schedule as that might dictate our time table...They have headphones ,and they audibly reconstruct the battle as you go through the appropriate patch of ground. It is about 2 hours long with a restroom pit stop and a get off at Little Round Top....also you really need the upper deck as the view and open air adds to the atmoshere....the kids would get a kick out of it also......As for food, there are great all you can eat buffets that are reasonbly cheap.....A Chinese place with plenty of room and variety enough ,if you are not a fried rice and chow mein guy of guy,and General Pickets Buffet ,which has family style menu.......Since I go to Gettysburg all the time, ask me and I will try to answer all questions...Michael

Well, I guess it just came down to who I knew- in fact, if COMBAT hadn't posted about the other store below, I wouldn't have known about it- in fact, to be honest, I don't know of the place you mention either. I don't get to GBurg too often, used to as the County was a client but no longer.

Some of it was a logisitics decision as well- GBurg is right next to the place where you buy the tix for the trip.

I don't have a headcount for this gathering at this time- I can take an educated guess at Me, You, Michael, and perhaps Louis. While John's shop is small, I think he can reasonably fit 4 people in there- I was there with 8 people last night. :D

If you or anyone else here has any other contacts, that's fine, we can consider them, otherwise, I just went with what I knew.

No problems - I think Johns shop is fine - what we might want to try is to see if we can hit a few of them? Thats an idea too? Time permitting.

Chris,
Not to throw a monkey wrench into your plans, but Fall In is scheduled for Gettysburg at the Ike Inn from November 9th through the 11th. I will be down there for the show and maybe you could tie a trip to the con into your schedule. Just a thought, I know Combat comes out for that one, I think Michael does too...................something to kick around anyway.

If not, maybe you could swing by the show yourself and say hello.

Louis, you are the man, but you've never been to Gettysburg? I'll pretend I didnt' hear that one.......

Chris
Springsteen mentions teh "Night of the Johnstown Flood "in his song Highway Patrolman on the album Nebraska

Couple of interesting things about the Johnstown floods. First, there were about the same number of people killed in the 1889 flood as on 9/11 - around 2,200. Second, we still pay a "Johnstown Flood Tax" in PA on alcohol to pay for the 1936 flood!!! About $200 million per year - none of which goes to Johnstown!!!

Well George, one of these days you gentlemen will have to help me remedy that. Unfortunatly not in October, as my wife is due to give birth to my daughter right around that time.

Louis,
You will be amazed at how well kept the battlefield is and most importantly, you will be amazed at the SIZE of the battlefield, it is huge.

As you walk around certain spots, you get the feeling something terrible happened there, it has an eerie feel to it I can't put into words.

One year, my cousin and I were in the wheatfield, an area of terrible hand to hand fighting. We walked in different directions away from each other on a bright sunny fall day.

As I walked, I heard noises behind me and thought it was him. It was not. It then got very cloudy and very cool, we both walked towards each other and decided to move along to another part of the battlefield.

He and I also walked the route the Confederates took in their assault on the Union center on the third day and it is amazing how much out in the open you are as you walk towards the Union lines.

It is truly hallowed ground.................

Can you come out in September??

The ghost tours have become a huge business in GB. So much so that there is talk of regulating them. The kids really seem to enjoy them and if you find yourself walking around here at night it can be a bit spooky. Particularly if you are coming from a local tavern after contributing heavily to the 1936 Johnstown flood relief! The other interesting thing taking place is an effort to restore the battlefield to conditions that existed at the time of the battle. Oddly enough that has meant a massive removal of trees and foliage over the last couple of years. The area was more open during the battle than in recent years because it was used as farmland in the 1860's. Lastly a new and much needed vistor's center is being constructed. I think it opens next year.

Combat

Why dont they replant the Peach Tree Grove?? or the Wheatfiled ??

They have replanted a number of fruit trees particularly over by the area of the first day's battle. Someone donated the money for that project. I'm not a farmer, but plowing and maintaining a wheatfield would probably be an annual event/expense for the park service. They have a limited budget for these projects.

Thats great I hope the fruit trees come back and give that aspect back to the battlefield.

Can anyone post the music or words to the tune " Night of the Johnstown Flood" That Bruce Springsteen mentions in the song Highway Patrolman

OK, an Eastern Division club update.......The Gettysburg Tour bus scedule is not out for October yet..They cut back on the runs because the season is winding down...I did get a phone # for a group discount for 10 or more....I am thinking out loud that the tour might be a logistic nightmare to fit in on a day where we start in Mechanicsburg and want to try to fit in a decent lunch and soldier shops for everyone attending...The tour is a full 2 hours and depending on what openings are available ,we might end up ,being a hostage to an overbooked schedule. What do others think and can we get a reasonbly firm head count for that day......Louis, I know that you cannot come because of prior maternity commitments, though I do remember the days when a woman gave birth and it was usual for the guy to be out of the way.....but times change:eek:...Michael

Michael brings up some good points and I have been chewing on a solution the past couple days and unfortunately, looking at it from a logisitics standpoint, I think we cancel the trip to my hooch here in the Burg and just form up in GBurg.

I am thinking we rally up at 9:30-10 or so and take the first or second tour of the day. We break for lunch and the afternoon is spent invading the TS shops of GBurg. We could, if time permits, grab dinner there in GBUrg or alternatively come over to my place, view my collection and then go to dinner afterwards.

I just think that doing my collection first would be too hectic- I agree with Michael.

Headcount wise, this is what I have:

Me and my entourage- 5 total though some my drop off
Cap Ron- 2- Himself- I am assuming your wife will be joining us??
Michael- 2- Himself and Wife

Combat said he would show up but not for the GBurg showing. I guess he could link up with us for lunch and then do the shops.

Thoughts??
