An Italian bricklayer tried to kill FDR in Miami while riding in an open car but instead shot the Mayor of Chicago, who was riding next to him, who later died of his wounds. The murderer seemed to be mad at capitalists. Technically, this doesn't count as a Presidential assassination attempt as FDR was not yet President; he would become so in a few weeks.
Several Puerto Rican nationalists tried to kill Truman when he lived in the Blair House, across the street from the White House; the White House was then undergoing repairs.
