Re: Battle of The Bulge

I've seen the Mosquito that Ray is talking about, in 1/32 scale, and it's great. I'm sure all the Corgi stuff is nice but you can't beat those Wooden planes. They are special.

Special yes, but for $1000.00 they **** well better be. Corgi is as little as $50.00, theres no comparison to the detail, Corgi hands down and it's a viable option for those of us with more shallow pockets.
Ray ;)

Mark that, just checked e-bay starting bid 30.00 buy it now 40

Couldn't agree more. I have the 2 Figarti P40's and a 21st P40. Next time I buy aircraft for a dio, it'll be Corgi.:)

Hands down? That depends on your perspective. If you'd like a nice mass production machine piece, then the Corgi is for you. But if you'd like a piece of art that is individually hand made, and will be a central place for your collection, then wooden planes are the answer.

It's all up to the individual collector, what we want and can afford.

By the way, the planes that Matt has have been marked up from $650.

I've seen some fantastic wooden planes in the $100-150 range. Admit that I have never seen a KC warbird so can't really make a comparison on the quality.

Doug,

I think those are nice too. I wasn't trying to say that only the K & C planes are neat. I just think wooden planes are really cool collectibles and there are a lot of sellers on ebay that have them in that range.

I don't recall having really looked at a K&C warbird--could somebody post a photo or two, for the sake of comparison? Greatly appreciated.:)

Re: Battle of The Bulge

Are the figarti nice?

I could be mistaken but they're made of resin and it's not bad, somewhat comparable to the two K & C polystone warbirds although I think those are a little nicer.

Re: Battle of The Bulge

Are the figarti nice?
Yeah, I think they are. The Dick Rossi came with a slightly warped wing, but I was advised not to try the hot water/cold water trick so I left well alone. The regular P40 was supplied okay. The undercarriage on both leaves a bit to be desired - but again, I haven't tried to tart them up any. I wanted a Flying Tiger dio, so I got the 21st Century version as well. It does need some work - but for the price, I can't complain. They all go very well with a couple of FoV jeeps, which I understand the FT's did get their hands on at some point in their existance. The Frontline FT pilot figures, a couple of Figarti Kuamintang figures - and believe it or not, K&C's SOHK Grannie with Baby rounded the dio off. I'd like to add some tents, and if I can get my hands on some, a couple of water buffalo.
I'll have to redo the base and some other details, but I'll post some photo's of the basic dio once all our stuff gets released by Chinese Customs.

The Dick Rossi plane is retired but Treefrog still seems to have some in stock and the price has actually been lowered to $230 from $279 so if anybody is interested I wouldn't delay.

I wouldn't be surprised if Figarti has some more planes at Chicago.

Re: Battle of The Bulge

I think the ME262a4 Jet bomber varient first saw service trying to bomb the bridge at Remagen.

You're probably right. I have read that the Arado 234 jet bomber was deployed against the bridge site and Hitler had V2s re-targeted against the Remagen area. The Luftwaffe also tried attacks with regular aircraft as well. The Remagen area soon boasted the largest concentraion of US AAA in the European Theater, 90mm guns, automatic cannon, multiple gun mounts, etc.

Hmm - a K&C FoB on Remagen? Late war US troops, armor (a good chance to create a K&C Pershing and be totally correct!) and other vehicles, plus German engineers, FLAK troops and Volksturm, civillian refugees PLUS themed aircraft to go with it. Certainly bears consideration (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

Apparently the Germans also even tried using divers against the bridge at night. However they were driven off by American spotlights and machine Guns.

Re: Battle of The Bulge

Most of the German air strength was horded for Operation "Bodenplatte" (spelling?). That was the big air strike on Allied forward airfields on New Years 1945. The last big gasp of the Luftwaffe in the west.

FYI there were a number of German air-to-ground operations around Remagen after the 9th Armored seized the Ludendorf Bridge there.

At one of the WW11 Military shows I attend annually I had the opportunity to have dinner and talk to C. Windsor Miller, winner of the D.S.C. for leading the first platoon of Easy-Eight Shermans across the Ramagen Bridge right behind the Infantry. He has written a book entitled A Tanker`s View of World War 11,copyright 2004 published by Thomas Publications Gettysburg Pa. Very inciteful content giving one a feel for what it is like to be a Armor Officer than and now.
