Shamus Wade, who sold Nostalgia figures in London more than 30 years ago, had a line of figures with very unusual subjects. They were more obscure units of the British Commonwealth---no 42nd Regiment of the Black Watch Highlanders here. The figures were initially done by the Scrobys of Blenheim, Marlborough & Star fame and later (after set 99) by Andrew Rose of Mark Time, Steadfast, Bastion & Wessex fame. The line included several hundred sets, most of which were not provided with boxes.

The following Nostalgia figures I have picked up on eBay or the toy soldier shows over the years. Since they had so many sets, I am trying to just buy singles of their output.

Photo one: From left, 240 Royal Guards of Canada, 1862-69; 267 Falkland Islands Corps, 1856; 144 Mohawk Institute Cadets, 1902; 202 Fanti Soldiers, Kumasi, 1874; 246 Erinpura Irregular Force, India, 1900; 196 Woods Irregulars, Zulu War, 1874; 122 Malay Armed Police, 1897; and 171 Royal Niger Haussas, 1897.

Photo two: From left, continued, 262 Mafeking Black Watch, Boer War; 59 Guant's Red Caps, Samoa, 1899; 211 West Indian Royal Engineers Submarine Mining Co., 1902; 126 Cyprus Zaptieths, 1897; 81 Ceylon Ceylon Gun Lascar Corps, 1896; 199 Lord Grifford's Scouts, Ashanti War, 1874; and 246 Erinpura Irregular Force, India, 1900.

Photo three: From left, continued, 147 Mosquito Indians,1845; New South Wales Irish Rifles, 1900; 217 British New Guinea Armed Constabulary, 1899; 150 2nd West Indian Regt, 1887; 69 Karen Military Police, Burma, 1899; 97 British Guiana Police, 1897; and 87 Indore Artillery, 1897.

The Vectis Auction that was held this past week end had a lot of Nostalgia figures. There were 90 offered; I bid 80 GBP but it went for 280 GBP which would put the price with premium and shipping way north of $600 USD.

HI Mike,

Seems like that has been the trend lately for the Marlborough Sets at the Vectis Auctions. Maybe the prices will settle down a little after the Holidays.
Which sets were you trying for?

All the best

Dave

Hi Mike,

As usual, what I ment to write was not what I wrote I was trying to point out that the Marlborough sets are doing the samething as the Wade Nostalgia Figures. So which singles were you trying to get? I have a few of his figures too and enjoy them a lot but they seem to be getting a lot more difficult to find.

Hi Dave,

I was bidding on the 90 figure lot kind of in the dark since Vectis was only showing a photo of about 12 of the 90 figures. Since I have about 40 Nostalgia singles and they produced more than 200 sets, I figured that I would keep the ones I didn't have and sell the duplicates. So I wasn't looking for any specific figures by number (they are all marked on the bottom with a set number).

What did you mean regarding the Marlborough sets? That they were getting pricey, hard to find, or what? The reason I ask is that I took about two dozen sets to the West Coaster in March and sold about half of them. However, I have noticed that fewer Marlborough sets are being offered at the West Coaster and Chicago than in the past.

Hi Mike,

Thats sounds like a nice batch of Wade figures. Sorry you didnt get it but the bidding seems to have really run wild on that auction.

As for the Marlborough sets I dont see as many as I used to and I am unsure as to why this is other than folks are hanging on to them. They also seem to be commanding higher than retail prices in a lot of the auctions I am seeing so there appears to be no really good deals to be had. The majority of the sets I am looking for are still available from the maker so no real worries there. Just the shipping is killer so if I can snag a set on ebay for a decent price and the postage isnt killer I'm happy.

Have fun in Chicago.

Dave

Could someone please tell me what reg't. is represented by Nostalgia set #297 ? They have green uniforms and spike helmets w/red facings...look like a rifle reg't. Thanks for the info -

Photo number three has a similar Rifle Regt. figure, but it is #284 South Wales Rifle Regt. Several recent issues (which I don't have) of Old Toy Soldier magazine has featured Nostalgia, maybe someone has their old copies available and can help you.

Thanks for the info, UCLA....do all Nostalgia sets contain 8 figures (officer and 7 other ranks) ? I used to own some Blenheim and Marlborough sets, and they usually contained 6 figures....any variations within the Nostalgia ranks ?

Now, I have a collection of mostly old Britains, with a scattering of Marktime and a nice Ammo mules and handler set from Langley Model's "Boys of the Old Brigade"...

The Nostalgia sets contained eight figures. However, the mounted sets with four figures, the bands, and colour parties were exceptions to this rule.

Set #297 are the New South Wales Irish Rifles...c.1900...nice figs., need one more trooper to complete the set, if anyone has him...

Mike, if you should ever want to sell the NSW Irish Rifle figure, please let me know - thanks, Uncled
